Re: Isle of Rum Russell Family

Rex, I have visited Rum at least 10 times. I have climbed Askival and Hallival, the highest hills. Right at the summit there are something like 100,000 Manx Shearwaters nesting in crevices in the rocks. They chatter away all the time and the noise is quite spooky. https://aspenoutdoors.co.uk/2019/07...

Re: Irish BDM registrations

Bill, You can’t rely on Irish marriage certificates to say whether a father is alive or dead. Sometimes his death was noted but frequently they didn’t bother. The odd time there’s a name but no occupation which can be a clue that he is dead. The Scots were generally fairly meticulous in recording pa...

Re: Irish BDM registrations

Bill,

Regarding Bernard McEntee’s death, Griffiths Valuation shows the family farm in Eshywulligan as being in Mary’s name in 1862. That probably indicates he had died before that (and thus before the start of death registration in Ireland).

Re: Irish BDM registrations

Bill, Glad to have helped. And glad you found the information you were looking for. I agree with you that the term “nephew” can have a fairly wide definition. Bad news about the 1926 census. The portion for Northern Ireland has disappeared. Nobody knows what happened to it. Some speculation it was d...

Re: Irish BDM registrations

Bill, Your Margaret was the only person named Margaret McEntee in Fermanagh in the 1911 census. (It’s not a common name. There were only 4 female McEntees in the county in 1911). So the question is, if this 1927 death isn’t your Margaret, who is she? Errors of 10 years or more in death certificates ...

Re: Irish BDM registrations

Bill, The records for Northern Ireland from 1.1.1922 onwards are indeed a separate collection. Irishgenealogy do not have access to them and only GRONI has them. https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk You need to register and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 to view each cert. So a death in Fermanagh post 192...

Re: Does the surname McCreadie mean anything to you?!

Further to my previous post, I can see a death for an Andrew McCready in Chorlton, Lancs, 1882, J Quarter, Volume 8C, page 445. You can order a copy of that death certificate from GRO Southport.

Re: Irish Census 1851

The source is likely the Pension Application records which used extracts from the 1841 & 1851 censuses to establish someone’s age for pension purposes (there being no birth certificates in Ireland before 1864). You needed to prove you were 70 years of age or older to qualify. LGB probably means Loca...

Re: Foundling / Exposed Child 1880's Scotland

I have come across quite a few foundlings in Irish records. (Left on the steps of the church according to the baptism records). The births were usually registered, and the child baptised. The forenames & surnames given to the child were sometimes of the person who found the child, or of the Minister...
