Hi Barb

I'm still using FTM version 6. :- :-
It is perfectly adequate for my purposes and works fine with Vista so there aught to be no problems with Windows 7. :)

Speaking of old versions, you can get old versions of software at http://www.oldversion.com/ (becausenewerisnotalwaysbetter) There’s even Internet Explorer 1.0. You would have to be a very brave person to use that one.

I can’t see any genealogy programs there. Apart from the version number it’s easy to tell the newer version of a genealogy program, the file download size is much bigger and there are very many more features that nobody ever uses.

I do so agree. I convinced myself about 2005 (when getting serious about this research) that I should upgrade from FTM V5 - There were pages of descriptions of all the new wonderful options - I sure don't use them & it cost me $79AU for the pleasure. I think you could get it for free with a magazine in the UK - I shall abstain from upgrading again.

And moving further away from the question (sorry TDH) I wonder why the 30gb disk on my old laptop was never more than 50% full, yet the 120gb of my new laptop is already 50% used - another of Life's little mysteries.

Hi Trish
I wonder why the 30gb disk on my old laptop was never more than 50% full, yet the 120gb of my new laptop is already 50% used
Every time there is an upgrade of an operating system or a new version of software such as "Windows" (from XP to Vista to Windows 7 for example), or any other software you have installed like browsers or family history software, these programs generally become larger in size, so taking up more room on your hard disk. Also many of the file types we are using and viewing online now (images, music, movies) are larger in size than they used to be, partly due to the larger storage capacity of your average PC (so it is possible to store these larger files without having "disk full" errors) but also very much to do with the increase in speed and subsequent ease of transfer of files over the internet brought about by broadband.

e.g.
Internet Explorer 5 (circa 1999) Size to download: about 9MB
Internet Explorer 8 (current version) Size to download: about 16MB

Legacy 4 (2003) Size to download: 15.6MB
Legacy 6 (2008) Size to download: 30MB

Once these programs are installed they will take up more space than the size of the installation files quoted above, but you can see in simple terms how in both cases the "size" of the program has pretty much doubled....

Best wishes
Lesley

There is also the "human nature" aspect of this

The bigger the HD the less likely we are to think twice about saving or downloading bigger files, this on the "Och! I've got loadsa room" syndrome

Perhaps I can blame it on the exchange rate - the number of images I have downloaded from SP over the past year has increased dramatically as the value of the $A increased - it may not be good economy if I find all my scots but have no space to save them :D :D

Trish

And of course Lesley's reply accounts for a large % of the additional space used - but I seem to be finding so much more info online downloading same is also a factor.
