Hello Jean Jeanie
If you are using Windows 98 it may be that you are working with a computer specification that is not suited to Windows XP in respect of processing speed and amount of RAM. This needs to be assessed before upgrading. I don’t think there is any reason to suppose that you will lose material by moving up to XP but you might find things a lot slower if the foregoing is overlooked.
In essence I think you should check with Microsoft what minimum computer specification is required for XP before installing it if you haven’t already done so.
I hate to put a damper on things for you but I have trod this path myself and found that whilst there were no problems with files, much of the software was corrupted and certain hardware devices became inoperable. As Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, it is not as straightforward as it used to be to download new drivers that are compatible with XP. I hope this is making sense.
I gave up kicking and swearing at my computer and bought a new one. I have now got so much RAM that it has been necessary to install a flock of sheep just to keep it all occupied.

Hi All

I run Windows XP on an old Pentium 3, 667, with 256 RAM and find I have had no problems with slowness, unless I have some other useless programme running  But I can sort that out quick if I realise the programme is taking up too much memory

Hi Malcolm and Others

Thanks for yur concern.

However my son, who lives abroad, built my PC for me just over 3 years ago and he knows it inside out.

He is coming home for Xmas on Firday 23rd with his wife and family. It's his idea to install it for me so I am assuming that he knows what he is doing :!:

All he asked me to do was back up all the files I wanted transferring. I always backup everything when I have added to my tree and to my documents. I was just getting paranoid in case it wouldn't work.

Keep your fingers crossed for me on the 23rd/24th.

If I disappear from the board for a while, you'll know I've had problems!!

Jean
