I've just re-read my "Intel" post Tracey and I apologise. On the re-read I think I came across a bit "School-marmish". It wasn't intended to come out that way.

I have to admit that my concern about your PC shutting itself down like that is that I, even after all my years using first DOS and then Windows in all its various reincarnations, I have never really come to trust it to shut down like that without doing other damage.

Just recently I had to re-install XP because one of their automatic upgrades shot one of my programmes down in flames. So much so that every time I used it for more than a couple of actions everything froze up and any attempt to unfreeze caused a shutdown. Each reboot resulted in other error messages until only booting up from the XP disk got me, at least, enough mouse control to shut down properly. Thankfully I'd done a backup the night before only because I wanted to take my stuff out on my laptop. ( Can't go anywhere without a puter  ).

No appology please because the likelyhood of me usually missing something like that is high

Anyways...........the more im reading the less worried i am 8-[
A lot of things or reasons why dont apply to me. I now think it could also have something to do with my lack of Virtual Memory (see told you i could have missed it !).

Just don't try calling Microsoft helpline, Tracey...

...unless you don't mind having a phone take root on the side of your face after 45 minutes (although I heard a ?myth? somewhere that the record is over four hours with a caller who used his phone's loudspeaker).

Just one wee point, if you don't mind...

If you reach the hair-tearing point and decide to re-install Windows, please remember to choose the "Upgrade option" instead of the reinstall, otherwise it completely clears everything out.

Yeah! Been there! Done that! Impatient frustration - what can I say

Hi Folks

Just a wee suggestion from experience - some of the problems you seem to be currently having may be related to insufficient memory (RAM) in your PC - particularily if you have XP with service pack 2 - which needs lots to run with. A local PC Geek may help to provide upgrade memory at reasonable cost - it worked for mine and solved all of my quite similar probs.

Best regards

Ted

For some more bedtime reading on this matter, go to Google or your preferred search engine and search for BSOD. That is "Blue Screen Of Death" - the name given to some serious operating system errors.

All the best,
