Thank you Andrew, I`ve had a quick look at the site you mention, and will return to it later and look for the area you have pinpointed.

The last time I saw Edinburgh was over 50 years ago, I was quite shocked when I realised just how long ago it was!
I bet I would hardly recognise some of my favourite places now.

I used to love (when I was a young girl...oh so long ago now)
Going up into the little room across from the castle nd seeing a lot of the city on a screen on a big white table (I`ve forgotten what it was called now, then entrance was about 2d or 3d, I was fascinated, especially if I put my hand on the table and a tramcar would run over it, and it was in full colour) I wonder if it is still there today.

I still cannot make out the word mentioned as West, it does look like Next
that is why I am so puzzled at the description. If I was a good deal younger and not disabled as I am now, I would love to visit Edinburgh again, I think I would be spending the whole time I was there, digging through all the records to look for my ancestors, how I regret now, not being interested in my family history in those days.

My gt uncle Edward Grant, would take me on long walks through all the old city and tell me the history of it, I loved history then, but not about my family, I can just imagine if I had been, what questions he could have answered for me, sadly he died when I was age 16, so that opportunity has been lost, he had no children either, so there are no descendants left in Edinburgh (at least as far as I know anyway)

Thank you again for your helpful suggestions and your interest in trying to help.

Hello Maud,

the "little room" is still there: it is the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions. 2d or 3d will not get you in there nowadays: £6.45 for adults!

John

It's many years since I was last in the Camera Obscura. It may have still been "old money" then (pre Feb 1971).

All the best,

Thank you for your comments, I do have fond memories of the place.

I have been neglecting coming on this site being tied up searching for another of my elusive ancestors

I have decided to leave that search for another little while and get back to some other items where I just might have more success.
I thought the English side were bad enough trying to find, but now the Scottish 1841 census is online at Ancestry, I had thought oh great, now I can find loads of my ancestors, WRONG straight away I hit a brick wall with gt grannie Euphemia Nelson, she disappeared, yet the census was taken on the 8th of June and she married on the 15th, she SHOULD have been there with her family, but OH NO, that would have been just too easy!!, I found her with no problem on 1851 right up to 1901 no bother and another marriage, but can I find her on 1841!

Well, there is a Euphemia Nelson, but not at the address she gave on the marriage document, for India Place, the only one I could find were a family of coal miners in Newton Edinburgh, at Miller Street, so , 1. Did she use the address by knowing someone who lived there to establish herself in the groom`s parish?
2. She could have been missed out on the census
3.She could have been mistranscribed, although I have tried every variation I can think of, but with no success, I have waded through every Nelson or variation of Nelson surname and clicked on to every one in the St Stephens parish where she claimed to have been living, ZILCH

I`ve given up for the moment now, I nearly fell off my chair, my bum was so numb!! and my eyes began to close

I`m sure these ancestors are all up there having a good laugh at us idiots all going ga ga searching for them !!

WHY DO WE DO IT?
