Of course #-o

I knew I'd done something way back in the past, but just couldn't remember what.

Hi Drapadew,

Until you find what you're looking for in saving your emails, you might want to consider copying those really important ones into a word document and save them that way. I actually copy and paste my emails with any family history directly into the "Notes" section for the individual in my Roots Magic software - works well for me, and of course, it's backed up.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi drapadew
There is a way to do this if you use "Outlook" or "Outlook Express" (the method is just slightly different for each program).
Create a new folder on your desktop .... name it something like "Emails saved"

In Outlook.... highlight the email without opening it......then "File".... "Save as"...... and in save as type, select "Message Format".
Save the email into the newly created folder on your desktop. Each email has to be saved individually

The method for Outlook express is the same except, the save as type will be "Mail (*.eml)".

The folder can then be put on CD, DVD or flash and when you open any of the emails it will open in Outlook or Outlook Express (you can even open the emails in a different computer, but the computer must have Outlook or Outlook Express installed).

I have uploaded a screenshot of how the folder would look. The open envelope icons are Outlook Express messages.... the closed ones are Outlook messages.

Hope this helps :?

I know that Windows Xp allowes you to safe all your Emails and export them from your old computer to your new one.
But is it possible to burn the same file on to a DVD so one can look back at them in the future.
Thanks

It may be a bit late to mention this, but have just seen your message. I had to clear my hard drive recently, and needed to back up my messages.

I was afraid of losing all my messages, and for Outlook Express 6, I used Backup Xpresso, on 30 day trial. from following address http://www.download.com/Backup-Xpresso/ ... 24886.html. I also used Microsoft's instructions from the following address:- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670. "Belt and braces" you could say.

Instead of placing back up files on DVD, I used a USB flash drive for first time. It was simple to use, and I had no problem restoring the files backed up using Microsoft info, after hard drive up and running. Backup Xpresso back up files were not needed.

Hope this helps
