I have heard some people buy cheap printers and when the ink runs out they get rid of it and buy a new printer rather than getting new ink cartridges due to the price.
It really depends what you need the printer for. I have an Epson R220, it is photo quality which is great for my photography and also allows me to print to printable CD/DVDs. I also use it for Uni work but not to a great extent.

I have an R220 as well, Andy and I'm very pleased with it's performance. Being able to print onto printable CD/DVD is great as well.
I get my compatible carts from two very reliable suppliers on a well known auction site. I've never been let down by them and the quality of the inks seems excellent, but are nowhere near the extortionate price of originals.
