Is there a computer Dr. in the house?

Post by JJ » Wed Dec 08, 2004 2:33 pm

I'm serously having massive spyware problems.....last night got nailed with some kind of disease and have run repeated ad-aware scans and virus scans. have quarantined all i can find and things looked clean this morning but now my Outlook Express won't load!!! Says it can't find msoe.dll . This seems to be a file that is an application extension and is located in my c\program files\outlook express . If it's there why won't it work??? I'm in big trouble if I can't get into my email...... Any advice from someone with experience???????? I'm baffled.....

Nasties

Jean.
Can you send me e-mail. My home site is pretty bomb proof. If not, can you communicate via this forum?

Things are going downhill rapidly....

I can access my pendex email account remotely through my server but will have to reroute mail before long...forget how many days or items they will hold. sturg@psouth.net is work email and "should" be ok....but i'm not there yet today. probably count on that location for me til further notice. I've downloaded a newer improved Ad-aware SE and it can't get through one cycle...totally locks up. Keybdmgr or ssdprv ???? are shutting it down as near as I can tell.....looks like a huge mess of nasties in there. I thought they were gone last night but I think they recreated themselves....UUUUGGGGHHHHHH!!! I'm calling in reinforcements but a trip to the computer Dr is an hour away and don't know yet what his schedule looks like!!! Everytime I go online it's like opening the floodgates for unwanted popups etc. Why me???

Time to indulge in Norton or McAfee.
I usually rescue what I can, and then scrub PC down to bedrock.
Hate those little twerps out there.

but you don't understand....

I GOT Norton....and I GOT Adaware....and run them religiously.....and it STILL got sick!! Computer Dr. gave advice via phone to start in safe mode and run the Adaware that way.....I did it .....TWICE...and got rid of over 300 nasty things....and then rebooted and it STILL has some in there and won't run correctly.....and still can't open the e-mail. These aren't just ads...it's Malware....Dr said they are worse than viruses!!! CPU is loaded in backseat of car. Trip to hospital is imminent. Recuperation is expected to take a day or TWO!! I've backed up everything I can but can't any of my email folders. If I lose 3 years worth of saved emails I may commit suicide. Some info is non replaceable. You may want to find an alternate AG member in case I don't make it.....

You CAN save e-mails
I can't remember precisely how, but you can save to read, at least.
They are too valuable to lose.

We will wait to see you back when ready.

Just post to the forum and we will update you.

saving your e-mails

Which version of Windows are you running. If it is Windows XP, then your e-mail messages should be in a folder within:
C:\Documents and Settings\your-login-name\Local Settings\
Application Data\Identities\{folder-name-of-many-letters-and-numbers}\
Microsoft\Outlook Express

All of your Outlook Express folders ought to be in that directory, by the time you've inserted your login name. These will be named of the style: folder-name.dbx. These can be copied from there to another disk if you have any plans to Format C, or anything of the like.

Similarly, your address book is at:
C:\Documents and Settings\your-login-name\Application Data\
Microsoft\Address Book

It will be there as a file: your-e-mail-name.wab

For older versions of Windows, the file locations are less complex, but I cannot recall them just now, but could be found by a search for .dbx and .wab files.

I hope that is helpful to you.

I use McAfee as a Firewall and Virus Scanner program. It is complex to set up, but I think it is effective. The current version has its equivalent to Ad-Aware built in.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

EDIT: Is the BOLD function not working? I am seeing the bold phpbb (HTML equivalent) tags in amongst the text above.

Re-edited: there was a tick in the "Disable BBCode in this post" box.
