Charting Software

Post by Jamboesque » Mon Jun 27, 2005 12:01 am

Hi Folks,

I have a bit of a wooly query. Wooly in that I don't really know if what I'm looking for is available as a 'buyable' option.

What I'm using for my general collating system is the 'Freebie' version of Legacy with 200+ subjects, and for the most part it does pretty good, and I may cough up the dough to get the big version, if it seems the best option.

But I'm now hitting a bit of a sticky patch in trying to isolate parts of the various branches of the tree at specific locations.

For instance I have located quite a few Groats in the Orkney Islands and as they begat other Groats (and married other folk) they moved on to other islands sometimes at the same time as other parts of other branches.

What I'd like to do is create a chart with the baseline time and have the ability to drop a 'life' (Born date & Death date) against the timeline for a specific location say Stonsay, Westray etc. This would mean I could easily see overlaps. This would effectively look like an old fashioned PERT/Gantt project management chart for those that know that sort of thing.

Does this make sense? Have I missed something very basic? Is there an easy solution?

Any suggestion would be most appreciated.

I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!

Hi Jamboesque,

Not sure if you can do this with Legacy, but here is how I convert my Family Tree Maker into a movable chart.

First in FTM I produce a custom report. Next under edit I click on “copy report”. I then open my Microsoft Word program and click on paste. Now make all of your headers BOLD. Under edit click on “select all” At top of page click on Table then click on “text to table” then at separate text at....... click "tabs" then hit OK.

Now if you move your curser directly over any of the headers click it to highlight it, then click on table at the top of the page you can select “sort” and you will be able to arrange any of your columns by text, number or date.

I find this to be a helpful chart to take with me when going to the Family History center. By looking at the chart I can see what is missing.

Hope this all makes sense. You may be able to accomplish the same thing with the Excel Program, but I haven't tried it.

Ina : Thanks for that, I've had a bit of a play using the search facility in Legacy and the idea of creating an Excel chart seems to have possibilities.
:)

Dennis : My limited experience of CPM chartings covers the time when we were dealing with big sheets (A0 and bigger) of gridded paper to the first DOS charting programs. Then I got moved from planning to research/development!
