When i go onto rootsweb i get a message on my pc saying " Your current securtiy settings prohibit running ActiveX controls. As a result, this page may not display correctly".
I remember something happening like this a very long time ago and typing the url of a particular site in so it would allow me to use it. I cant remember how i did it. Is this the same sort of thing and could someone tell me how to rectify this message please as simply as possible !
Thanks
Tracey

Thanks Lesley,
Did that and i still got the message so i went back and enabled one of the other options as well and the only ones now that are not enabled are Unsigned ActiveX controls and Initialize script activex controls not marked safe.
Is this ok or do you think i should enable them as well ?
Tracey

Hi Tracey
Have you closed the Browser and launched it again? usually new settings do not take effect till the browser is relaunched.
Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. as you can see from my first post, I'm still at the stage where I don't press the keys in the correct order....
Those two you mention sound like there could be security risks involved. I think you need to be careful who you let run Active X content on your PC, as far as I remember. I'm sure someone else will be along with some more accurate info....Is this ok or do you think i should enable them as well ?

Just enabling ActiveX didnt make a difference and i did come out of rootweb and go back in again. It was only when i went back and enabled another option - as there are seven options relating to ActiveX - that sounded "safe" that it worked. I didnt touch the ones i mentioned above as they dont sound "safe"

Hello Tracey,
Because of the security failings of Internet Explorer, largely a result of things like ActiveX, I swapped to Firefox years ago. I no longer get those annoying messages that make things sound as if the sky is falling. Firefox doesn’t use ActiveX.
If you start lowering the general Internet security settings in IE to below the default just to satisfy the needs of one or two web sites or to quieten a particular warning or error message you could turn normal web surfing into a risky business.
I think I would go back to the security settings and change them to the default setting (Medium in IE6). As far as I know normal ActiveX controls should be enabled when the security setting is at default. Then go back to the web page that gave you the message. See if the message still appears. Cancel the message and see if what you need to do on the site can be done.
If you still can’t get a particular site to work and you trust that site as much as you would trust your mother you can put that site on a list of trusted sites and lower the security settings for just those trusted sites.
On the security tab you’ll see four images for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites and Restricted Sites. Click on Trusted and you’ll see a button where you can add the URL of the trusted site. There’s also a default button that will move a slider to low, you might prefer it to be on medium low and maybe change it to low later if that doesn’t work. Click apply, and then the Internet Image to make sure the general internet setting is still at medium and click OK. Go back and check what you’ve done to make sure that when you click on the Internet and Trusted images the settings are at Medium and the lower setting respectively.
That is how it works as far as I know but I don’t know how any of this has changed in IE7. There’s a tutorial for IE6 here: http://surfthenetsafely.com/slides/ieco ... slide1.htm
See how you go and post back if any problems.
Alan
LATER: This tutorial looks easier: http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone7.htm
