Any newly installed version of Legacy will be able to open any Legacy or gedcom files you have previously saved. (With the exception of an earlier version of Legacy not being able to open a file from a later version of Legacy, which is probably not going to be a problem, but thought I'd mention it anyway!) Current version is ver.7. You can still download ver. 6 though, if you had not quite upgraded to 7 yet.

When you download and install Legacy, installing the actual software program will not overwrite or replace any stored files in the Legacy folder. (Legacy stores the data by default in the er...folder called "Data"! no surprises there... ) Normally if you create a file in Legacy, it is saved and stored in the Legacy file format. Legacy can create gedcoms but only if you specifically ask it to: the default file type is a Legacy file.

I don't think it will matter which of the Legacy servers you download from.

I would always ensure that you create backup copies of all Legacy databases on a different disk from your start up disk in any case (e.g. CD, or external HD or memory stick)...but you do this in anycase going from what you have said, so there should be no problem.

Best of luck
Lesley

Well, back up those back up disks, ensure all files are intact and you'll be able to breathe easy...for a while!

Best wishes

I downloaded it and although mine was Legacy 7 this "new version" looks nasty so it looks like a "tweeking" weekend for me !

When I downloaded ver 7 I didn't think it was that much of a change in the normal day to day kinda way. Almost everything is in the same place, so it all felt like a familiar environment to me.

Best wishes
Lesley

You can select which browser you use Tracey. Open Internet Explorer and search for your preferred one, ie Mozilla Firefox - which I use by the way and have had no problems with. Download it and as it does so I think it asks you if you would like to use it as default, and you say yes; should be no problems then.

(I hope I understood the remark!)

Nina i understand none of the above, not your explanation just all pc talk :) but - the man who did my pc (he put on a different version of Windows and more memory made me wireless, sorted out viruses et al) set my page to internet explorer with a link to aol.co.uk as a home page link. This isnt the same as the aol.com home page (the favourites, buddie list or all i have "saved" ect are not stored or usable in the same way) so what needs to be done apparently is to run my aol software again but the problem i have doing it myself is that as i am now "wireless" in more ways than one after the 10 days ive had without a pc, the aol software is looking for the BT router that is linked to aol which isnt there re me being wirelss so hopefully come Monday all will be back to normal when the pc man brings back my laptop with new Windows, memory, no viruses. Ummmm :-k that sound very familiar
