How do I find out how much room I have on my computer?

Post by sheilajim » Sun Oct 19, 2008 10:39 pm

Hi all

Is there any way that I can find out how much space I have on my computer? I am one of those technically challenged people.

Regards
Sheila

Hi Shiela,

Click on My Computer, or Computer if you are using Windows Vista, and you should get a list of the drives (Hard Disk Drives, Floppy Disk Drives, CD-Drives, DVD-Drives etc.) the system can see and the usage of each of these drives. If you have no floppy-disk, CD or DVD in the drive, then there will be no measurement given for that/those drive(s). Where there is a measurement made, it is usually given in figures and a graphic representation.

All the best,

Hi Andrew

Thanks for the info.

Using your directions I found this info. Total size 70.9. Free Space 53.8.

Is that good or bad? I am supposing that the term Free Space means what I am using at the moment. Not the programs that are not running at the moment.

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

That looks to be the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The total drive size is 70.9(presumably GigaBytes), of which your files (operating system, program files and your data files) take up 17.1Gb (about 24%), leaving free space of 53.8Gb (about 76%). I would assume that a fair amount of the used space is the system and program files, so your data uses a small portion of the 17.1Gb. On that basis, unless you add some radical amount of programs, and your data use doesn't suddeny change, then you have plenty of HDD space left.

I will stab a guess that it is an 80Gb HDD with a portion of it partitioned off for recovery purposes. The small portion may be hidden, and hence not show up on the statistics you found.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew

Good guess. :D It is an 80GB HD, but my computer is 4 years old.

I added a couple of programs a few weeks ago and wondered if I was short on space. It seems as though I am okay and I am not likely to add more programs in the foreseeable future.

Thanks Again.
