WIFI interference

Hi all

a different problem this time.
The pub next door (how many people would love that!!) has WIFI.
my laptop is WIFI enabled so everytime I connect to the internet, one of my choices is the pub next door. I do not have a password for the pub's WIFI and do not intend to as I have my own orange broadband.

The problem is that if I am online, and the pub's customers are using the WIFI at the pub, them going online and offline tends to knock me off line. and I keep having to reconnect. fortunately I do not lose the page I was on, but it is still a stramash.

This only happens when the pub's WIFI is enabled, not any other time. my broadband connection is extremely reliable.

i have just had a thought. as my laptop is WIFI enabled, would my broadband connection appear as a choice for the pub's customers using the pub's WIFI? and them trying to access my laptop knocks me offline?? I think I'lll have to go up to the pub and investigate.

anyway, is there any way I can stop this
All thoughts gratefully received.
By the way I was knocked off twice while writing this post!!

The pub customers will probably see your broadband connection as an option, but should not be able to connect to it if it is secured, which I trust is the case....

Hi Annpa,

Do you have a trusty friend who would use a WiFi session in the pub and see if your connection comes up as a choice? As Lesley says, I hope it comes up as a secure network that they cannot access. If however it comes up as unsecured, their customers would have the option of usung your connection. Then it is for you to make your connection secure, password protected.

Thanks for the replies.

I did find the wireless button which i pressed and apparently the wireless is disabled.
i cannot, however, find any way to password protect my Wireless connection and protect it from access by another computer.

any ideas as to how I can do this?

i've gone all the way through the help files, and I think I have protected my laptop. must ask at PC world the next time I am there.
