Where is my image?

Post by annie1 » Sat Nov 29, 2008 2:10 pm

Hi All,

I had found a transcription of a passenger list in findmypast, I viewed the original document, then saved it to my computer and was asked if I wanted to open it there and then, I clicked no and noticed it said, saved to temp internet files, ok, but I have searched for ages and its not there, I managed the last time to save searches so I dont know whats happened, I have also used all my credits that I had left by going into my past history and clicking on the transcription, well I think thats whats happened, because they are gone :? Can anyone offer any help?

Hi Ann

When a file is saved to 'temporary internet files' it may be cleared every time you switch off your PC - if it is set to do that. In which case you have lost it totally.
If you only clear your Temp Internet folder of files and cookies periodically then it may still be there but hidden behind some obscure name. If you know the date that you accessed it you should be able to locate it by using the search facility set to look for " .tmp" files. there will be dozens , if not hundreds, but at least you can check them by date and open them.

Sorry to be so pessimistic but a modern PC with umpteen Gigabytes of memory can hold an awful lot of files. [comp03]

If you find masses of .tmp files perhaps you should clear them out and increase your available memory space. [soapbox]

Fingers crossed for you.

Hi Ann,

Are you able to re-find it on findmypast, and save it again. However, don't let it save it to the wilderness of Temporary Internet Files. Save it to My Docs or some other similar place where you can find it again. You may need to use the "save as" command to do this if "save" does not allow you to change the location.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Ann,

Try using the windows search to find all files with the .djvu file type. That's the one Findmypast uses.

Good Luck.

If ever i lost a file - usually because i didnt save it to any specific folder - i usually find it hiding in C Drive
Click
Start
My computer
Local disc c

Also look in program files folder if its not visible, it might be lurking in there.

Hello Ann,

I don’t know if this will do any good as it will depend a lot on the things that have been mentioned previously.

If you’re using Internet Explorer as a browser and Windows XP the Temporary Internet Files can be seen by clicking Tools – internet options – settings – view files. (They’re actually at C:\Documents and Settings\Alan\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files).

If you select detail view (on the top menu) you can sort the columns by size, date, and file type by clicking on the headings. If you know the file type and the likely approximate size (from previous downloads) of the file and the date and approximate time you saved it you may be able to identify it.

Otherwise you could click the history button on the IE toolbar, look for the day you accessed the document, find the Find My Past folder and click on each of those pages listed to see what turns up. (Try that first)

Hope something works,
Alan

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for your help and tips on finding this file, I know it is there somewhere, but I have vista now and it's not as easy as xp was to find things, I dont even know if I have got the right temp files, as there isn't very many and the dates range from last year to this
I looked in my local C, but nothing, and I checked with search for the djvu because thats what I have a few others docs saved with but no luck.
I could go back on findmypast, but it would charge me again I think :? I have only used the site a few times, so I thought it was quite like Scotlandspeople and didnt take my time to check, that will teach me!!
I will have another go today and see what I find.
Thanks again
Ann
