Hello Maggie
There’s a bit more about a similar problem here. I don’t know if it will help but you may get some clues. I haven’t been blighted with Vista and hope never to. http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12771
Good luck and let us know how you go.
All the best,
Alan

Hi Maggie,
I had the same problem not long ago, after what seemed like an age, and people losing thier patience
I eventually found my Temp Internet Files and Cookies, here's how I did it.
Open your Internet Explorer, left click on tools in your toolbar, go to Internet options, on General Tab, click settings under Browse History, then go to view files. They should there
I was told there were more but they are hidden under a virtual folder, but I am not going to go down that route
Vista
Good Luck
Ann

Hi Maggie,
I’ve been watching this thread hoping that someone has found an answer to this Ancestry/Vista problem. My wife also has a laptop with Vista and we’ve never found a way of saving certain Ancestry images to the computer, when it says the image will be saved into “Internet temporary file” the image is not there (or anywhere else that we know of).
This is what we do (I know it sounds like walking out the front door, going around the block just to get to the back door);
My wife e-mails me the image to my computer (Windows XP), I then need to log onto Ancestry to view the image, I e-mail it back to her and she is then able to save it into her files. It works for us, but there has got to be a simpler way, but so for we haven’t found it.

Hi all,
I've been watching this thread because I have a laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium and I've never encountered the Temporary Files problem! I don't know how many versions of Vista there are, but here is the way Home Premium works for me.
When I want to save an image from Ancestry, here's what happens:
Click the Save button in the toolbar with the image.
A window from Ancestry with the following opens:
Save image to:
Attach to someone in my tree.
Save to my Shoebox.
Save to my computer.
(Save image to your hard drive)
I check the Save to my computer choice, then click OK.
The Save As window on my computer opens. I choose where I want to save the image to: Desktop, docuements, etc. from the side menu. Clicking the choice selects it to the open space at the top of the window. Then I go down to the bottom and type in the name for this file in the File Name space and finally, click Save. The file shows up in whatever location I picked--usually the desktop. I never see anything named Temporary Files.
I would go to the Help section for Vista and ask someone what is going on. Or maybe someone who knows more about computers than me can explain why you and I are getting such different results!
Carol

Hi Bob and Carolyn,
Received your PM, but I'm answering here because Vista has created problems for many people!
I think you are correct that it is probably a security feature which is blocking you when you try to download from Ancestry. However, I can't tell you which one because I really don't understand this all that much myself!
Go to your Control Panel and click on System and Maintenance.
Click on Get Started with Windows.
Double click What's new in Windows Vista. This should open a large window on the right of your screen.
Near the top: Look for Post A Question in Windows Communities. Click on Windows Communities and follow the instructions.
or
At the bottom left find Ask Someone or expand your search. Click on this and it will take you to the online help center.
Do not hesistate to post questions or ask them for help. That's what these options are set up for. I have found the Communites forum helpful because you can find people who have similar problems and see what their solutions are. Also, the sympathy is great!
The Windows Online Help and Support works too, but may take longer to get an answer to you.
The whole experience may seem tedious or miserable. I suspect from your comments that you just don't have the experience to feel comfortable with your computer. You're in good company! Some teenager had to tell me to jiggle the mouse to open the home page the first time I sat down at a computer! Stick with it. You will be able to solve this problem!

If an image is downloaded into temporary files because Microsoft knows best and it then disappears maybe that’s because the place it’s going to is already overflowing. This Ancestry page has information about clearing and increasing the size of your cache. See the bit about Vista and IE7. http://tinyurl.com/bl8ogk
If you’re not happy with that and you want to be the boss then perhaps the objection that Vista has regarding the images is an ActiveX thing. If you are using the Enhanced Image Viewer it possibly requires the use of ActiveX to operate. ActiveX is a security nightmare and in the hands of horrible people can do horrible things to your computer. The solution may be not to use the Enhanced Image Viewer provided by Ancestry as you really don’t need to.
I don’t know where these would be lurking on a Vista Machine using IE7 but for XP in Internet Explorer at the top of the screen click on Tools then on Manage Add-ons, any ActiveX control for the Ancestry viewer should be visible possibly under a different name. Select it and click the disable button and then click OK. Restart your IE and try again to download the image as set out by Carol. It’s easy to re-enable the Viewer if necessary.
Maybe that’s the problem.

Alan,
You maybe right about the ActiveX viewer thing. It seems to me that I had a problem similar to this one a year or more back and it was solved by enabling the image viewer on Ancestry.
Bob, Maggie and all,
Call up an image on Ancestry. Once it opens fully, look up at the top right corner of the image for a line that says "If you are having trouble viewing this image" or something like that. Click on that line and follow their instructions. If that doesn't get you to the image viewer download, go to the Ancestry Help page.
Sorry to be so vague this morning. Haven't had my second cup of coffee yet!
