AVG scans

Post by speleobat2 » Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:40 pm

Hi everyone,

I realize that there is no "normal" with computers (or anything else for that matter), but my AVG software seems to be running scans all the time and they seem to be getting longer. A few months ago, the scan would run once every week or so and I hardly noticed it. It would take 5-6 hours. Now it appears to be scanning nearly every day and the most recent one took 23 hours and 38 minutes to scan the whole computer.

I tried changing the frequency of the scans last week, but the next time I checked, it had been changed back to every day at 8:00 am. Even stranger, it doesn't start the scan until about 1:30 pm. Also, sometimes its running "new scheduled task" which I'm guessing is some kind of update because it doesn't last very long.

Any ideas as to what may be going on here? The full scan does seem to slow everything down which is the main irritation.

Hi Carol,

I'd be tempted to ask the AVG folk direct about this.

I've been using AVG for a long time now and never experienced this on my PC which has a 350GB hard disk, so I'm wondering if the program on your PC is possibly corrupted.

I would suggest you manually run a full scan with AVG first though to see what happens, just in case it is the automatic part that is at fault.

Hi Mary,

Well , the latest "new scheduled task" just finished after a little over four hours. I went in and reset the frequency of scans and the time to 1:00 am and deleted an extra scan and two extra new scheduled tasks. So far it seems to be accepting my directions. We'll see!

If it changes anything on it's own, I will definitely contact AVG.

My scan got to eleven hours on Sunday and i ended up stopping it as it could have gone on for ever. Usually it takes on average 4 ish hours. Havnt had time to run another scan yet and will probably end up waiting to see what this Sundays scan does first.
May just be coincidence but a few days beofre this i got a message to upgrade AVG free and i ignored it because i didnt have the time to watch over what was happening.

Tracey,

Glad it's not just me, but not glad something happened with yours! My next scan is scheduled for 1:00 am Saturday morning. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

Hi Tracey,

Just sat down to post this.

When I got up this morning and logged on, I went straight to AVG to check the scan that was scheduled for 1:00 am this morning and the window said that the next scheduled scan was Apr. 27 which is the way I had set it up. Then I checked the scan notification down in the lower left corner of the AVG window and it said the last scan was Apr. 23. Should have said Apr. 25 so I checked the Scan History and there was no record of this morning's scan! It still shows the Apr. 23 scan.

I went back to the window showing the days and time settings. I had reset this to Mon., Wed., Sat. at 1:00 am. Thur. was also checked. I unchecked Thur. and clicked on Save, then went on to my email. Before I logged off, I went back to AVG to check everything again. Thur. was once again checked!

[computer]

I'm going to run a scan manually right now and see what happens. Then it's time to have a chat with AVG!

I've been watching my scheduled scans very carefully to see if there has been any "funny business" going on, but it is all running exactly as it should.

The AVG updates are all "up to date" as well. I'm using Windows XP (being totally anti-Vista).

I've not mentioned this before as it is too awful to think about but there are nasty viruses that can and do actually surreptitiously corrupt anti-virus programmes in order to have their wicked way.

Hi Mary,

Yes, there's all kinds of nasties out there. So far everything seems to be in order though. The manual scan is running merrily away and the notification section of the AVG window down in the lower left corner has updated to the current scan. I'll wait until this one is finished and see what it turns up. I am going to contact AVG and find out what happened to the one that should have run at 1:00 am Sat. morning though.

I noticed from reading the FAQ on the AVG website that there have been problems with the updates not updating. Maybe it's something similiar. My updates are all current.
