MAC and PC compatible

Post by havingbeen » Fri May 01, 2009 10:20 pm

Anyone tell me if there is any genealogy software which will run on both mac and pc. I've a desktop PC with Vista and a MAC laptop with OSX Tiger.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi
I use Legacy on my PC and it looks like it runs on Mac's too, but not sure if OSX Tiger is one of them.

I'm not aware of any genealogy software that has a version that runs on Macintosh and Windows systems- that includes Legacy which is ONLY for Windows PCs.

There was a software called Heredis that had a Macintosh and a PC version, but just now see this note on their website...

"You are a user of Heredis 7.2 for Windows?

We wish to thank you for the confidence you have expressed in your choice of Heredis 7.2 for your genealogy. Unfortunately, we are obliged to inform you that this program will no longer be commercialised by BSD Concept in English. The decision has been taken to concentrate our resources on the Macintosh version of the program."

Perhaps the best suggestion I can make if you want to use the same software on each computer is to install something like VMWare Fusion on the Macintosh and run Windows on that, then you can use a Windows software on both the Macintosh and the PC.

Or just limit your work to the Macintosh since it's portable and so presumably more useful than a desktop computer you can't take with you to the Library, archives etc.

Hi all
I'm a Legacy user too, so I went to have a look on their web site following on from what Stew said, as I was not aware it could be used on a Mac, but looks like it can be used on some:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Features.asp
Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows ME*, Windows 98*, Windows NT, Windows 2000 (Legacy runs on newer Macs with Parallel, Bootcamp or Fusion. Legacy runs on Linux machines with a Windows emulator like Win4Lin, VMWare or Sun's Virtual Box)
Best wishes
Lesley

Technically, any windows based software will run on an newer Intel based Mac using the Windows emulation tools. I had a good search recently and could not find any software that runs on both Mac (directly) and PC. Shame really -- maybe there is a market for it! ;-)

I run my software (Mac Family Tree) on the Mac Laptop and tend to carry it with me. I also sync. with my iPhone so all my data is available with me all the time. I also use iFamily for Leopord as I like the chart printing in it.
