Hi.
I think this may have been asked before. Is there a program that will let you select a couple of people on your tree and tell you how, or if they are related to each other? I'm asking this because my tree is getting pretty large ( currently 1175 ) for me to answer questions that I'm getting regarding folk that I had forgotten were on my tree and how they got there. For example; I have Temple group of which one married a male Arnot, they had an Arnot daughter who married a widower Perkins ( whose only children were from his first wife ). So for me it appears that it was the end of the Arnot connection. I've been adding everybody that was ever connected in any way to my original line.

I'll be surprised if this facility doesn't exist in most programmes, but you may have to go looking for it in the menu structure ..............
It certainly exists in Brother's Keeper, where there is a "Compute Relationship" facility ............

Hi Dennis
"Legacy" will do this too - but only the full version. The free version which you often find on CDROMs with magazines doesn't do it.
In the full version select one of the people you are working with, go to Tools> Relationship Calculator, and in the dialog box which appears, click "select right" to select the other person from your name list.
Legacy will tell you how they are related & show the relevant list of persons names to illustrate that relationship. If they are not related it will tell you!!
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Dennis,
I'm using same as Lesley - Legacy 5. Or will be once i get everyone into it!
I like it because you can set anyone you wish to be the "source".
For eg, say you use yourself, then no matter what other name you are looking at in the programme it will show that person's relationship to you (or, as Lesley says, not if there is no blood relationship).
Also it allows you to view up to 15 children on the page without having to scroll down to see their names (i really like this - useful for large families).
And any name you click on automatically goes to their page - you can of course use the index.
I tried a few programmes until i settled with this one - i much preferred it's page set-up (plenty bells & whistles too if you want to use them).
But it's really all down to personal preference - there are many good programmes to chose from.
Maybe try out the trial versions - and have a really good read up on them. A google search will show reviews on them too.

Hello Jack.
You put an issue that I am not sure about. Is a blood relative the same as a dna relative?
dennis
PS. Is the 'Deluxe' version the same as saying the 'Full' version?

Hi Dennis,
You've got me there - really haven't a clue! One for the experts.
I'd guess that unless you know how a DNA relative is related to you (through marriage etc) then any programme couldn't show an exact relationship.
Blood relationships are quite clear, because if even quite complicated there will always be a thread to link up names.
DNA relatives are related to you in some way - but you can't always find the thread.
I'm not sure if what i've said is right, and i sincerely trust someone will correct me if i'm wrong.

My own Legacy 5 programme says "Deluxe" - presume that does mean the full version. Hope so for the price!

Hi Jack & Dennis
My fault for referring to the "full version" of Legacy. Sorry for any confusion. It is, as Jack said, the "Deluxe" version.
Best wishes

Hi All
Davie, that Brother's Keeper is a great program; its too bad that it doesn't include marriage relationships which could show half-sibs.
