Hard Drive Packed Up!

Post by Jean Jeanie » Sun Jun 21, 2009 7:47 pm

Hello All

Last Saturday my hard drive packed up.

Thought I was OK as I had all my data backed up on a flash drive.

However, today I have found out that everything, APART FROM LEGACY is ok.

I get error messages when I try to upload it.

I can send anyone what I have on the flash drive, if they can help me at all.

Of all the things to be lost.   Just not my year.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean
Sorry if I'm being thick here, but have you tried to install Legacy onto the now fixed(?) hard drive? Or are you maybe trying to open them on a different PC which does not have Legacy installed?

Your Legacy files will not open if the Legacy software is not installed. But maybe you have already done this and the files cannot be opened in Legacy?
What sort of files are they on the flash drive? What is the extension e.g. does it/they end .fdb, .TC .FG .RGD etc or similar?

Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. horrid thing to happen. PCs are great until they start playing up....

Oh Namesake!!! This is dreadful news!

I've never (knock wood) had to re-install my family tree from my backups. I do however have family trees generously sprinkled around...on my work computer on my flash drive on my home computer on my mother's lap top etc......i figure even if they don't all get backed up simultaneously if things should really go south I'll have a slightly older version to fall back to instead of day one.

I use Legacy so if there is anything I can try to do to lend a hand just yell. Try sending over your data and I'll see if I can open it. I don't suppose it's in gedcom format but in the offical legacy format only??? Don't despair...therre has got to be a solution to this. Maybe your Legacy software got corrupted or something. Maybe you just need to download a fresh version and then try re-installing your backed up data.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Ladies

I thought I had backed up the whole program and all the data.......but maybe not!!!

I could download the free edition again, but I had paid for the de luxe version.

All is not lost. I can export a gedcom from the GR site and load it into the free version, but I would like to have my de luxe version again, without having to pay for it again. Also the GR site does not contain all my notes on each individual. Again I can retrieve this from hard copies I have but this will all take time.

Jean, I'll send you what I have on the flash drive and see if you can make any sense of it.

Best wishes
Jean

Oh you can get the deluxe version again!! :D Just email Legacy and tell them what happened. I had to reload software into a new computer once and so had to download the freebie version and didn't have my old access key to open it to the deluxe version and I emailed them and asked for it. THey were very quick to re-send. Once you've paid once that's all it takes!!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

Hopefully tomorrow they will send me the access key to the de luxe version and I will be able to carry on.

Hi Lesley and Jean

Legacy came up trumps. Back in operation again :D
