Am I the only one having problems?

Post by Anne H » Fri Jun 26, 2009 10:00 pm

For the past couple of weeks I seem to be having some kind of computer freeze where I can't log on to TS or go back to correct errors, etc. when posting, without it taking forever to move. My little flickering pointer doesn't show up until I've clicked my mouse a couple of times, then the egg timer comes up and more waiting.

Anyway else having this problem?

Regards,
Anne H

I've not had that problem at all. I've accessed TS from work (!), home, and also in the garden and all has been fine. Different computers, different connection types.

Have you cleared your cache and temp. internet files on your browser? If you are not sure how to, let me know what browser you use and what version.

Hi David,

I'm not sure how to clear the cache and temp. internet files...I'll gladly accept any help. I use IE8...I wonder if that's the problem, I only started using that a few weeks ago!!!

Ok, let's give it a go.

Firstly, deleting these files is nothing major. THe cache and temporary internet files are used by your browser to help speed up your experience. When you return to a website your browser will check to see if it has a copy of the page already stored on your computer. If it does, then it checks to see what has changed and only downloads the changes. In theory this makes surfing a little faster. Some times it gets out of sync and causes problems.

When in Internet explorer click the Safety menu towards the top, right of IE8. Then select Delete Browsing History

You should see this....

I would suggest you tick only have Temp Internet Files ticked (also remove the tick to 'Preserve....') and then click Delete.

Now try using TS and see what happens?

Hi David,

Just did what you suggested but so far it doesn't seem to have solved the problem. I think I'll come back to it after dinner and see what happens then.

Hi Anne
This may not be the cause, but a while ago I had similar problems with all sites I went on including TS. It was my anti-virus programme(s), tried two, that were the problem. After an update the AV became to efficient for it to be of any use to me when browsing.
Just a suggestion.

Hi StewL,

Thanks for mentioning it. I have the full AVG and I did wonder about that, but if anything, I'm beginning to think it might have something to do with the new Internet Explorer 8 I just installed a couple of weeks ago...I could be wrong, but I didn't have this problem before then.

I think I'd better try to figure out how to get back to my old IE7, or whatever it was I had. Funny though, the problem mainly seems to be only TS, but as I'm writing this post, it seems to be improving a little...finally. Maybe David's solution worked afterall.

Hello Anne,

If you suspect IE8 is the problem it may be an ideal time to give Firefox a try to see whether there’s any improvement. You can have both IE and Firefox installed at the same time and even use them simultaneously. There would be no problem uninstalling Firefox if it’s no better or you don’t like it. It’s available here http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Mozill ... ixmoz.html

All the best,
Alan

I stopped using IE8 at work for the same reasons Anne.It just kept freezing & telling me I couldn't view that site"Unsafe Internet browsing".
I use Firefox instead.

Hi Alan and Joette,

I've been thinking about installing Firefox from reading previous posts about it but I'm not that technical and thought I'd leave well enough alone but I think I'll try it now. The only reason I downloaded IE8 was because of something I thought I was going to use with my MS Office Pack...couldn't have been that important since I've forgotten what it was.

I've been reading up on IE8 and it seems lots of people have been having problems and found MS instructions on how to uninstall it so I'll do that later today.

Funny thing is that I finally was able to log on to TS and am typing this post - even able to make corrections and highlighting with no problems this morning...it's amazing. I've never actually had a problem with browsing (that I've noticed).

I'll get reading before I download or install anything else.

Many thanks everyone.

Regards,
Anne H
