FTM 2010

Post by trish58 » Sat Jan 09, 2010 7:14 am

Need help please before I do anything.......

I have been using FTM version16 for about the past 5 years, I now have the new 2010 version.

My question is, do I install this over the top of the old version, the instructions don't say, I would hat to lose all my previous work. Plus of course I make no secret of being a computer "dummy".

Thanks-Trish :D

Hello Trish,

The blurb for FTM 2010 installation is here. http://www.familytreemaker.com/Support/FAQ.aspx
Read it carefully. It says that it doesn’t replace the old version but installs as a completely separate program. You can keep both if you prefer. You can uninstall the old version later if you wish to. See the separate page regarding importation of data from Version 16 or older.

I’m not familiar with the program but it looks safe enough just to do the installation. Be careful to read and understand any questions asked during the installation. It’s always a good idea to first do the usual back-up of your data onto external media or to somewhere on your computer, such as your Documents Folder, where you know exactly where it is if you need it.

Someone with more experience of the program may be able to let you know a bit more.

All the best,
Alan

Thanks again Alan

Backed up FTM V16, installed 2010 no problems, imported what I had onto 2010, backed all that up again.

I imported my whole tree from Ancestry.com onto the FTM 2010 great stuff all my photos came with it, so maybe I will eventually will get my head around this computer jargon.......

Thanks-Trish =D>
