Help!!!

Post by PaulaD » Tue Jan 26, 2010 5:49 pm

I'd been away from my computer for the weekend and when I got home last night tried to go on Ancestry but it wouldn't load. Just got pc taking an age to think about it then a white screen. Today I've tried again and not only can't I get Ancestry, Family Search & Ellis Island have disappeared too. Got no problems getting on TS, google, facebook, youtube etc just the important sites.
Have defragged pc, deleted cookies, run avg scan and no idea what to do now.
I use Windows XP & Firefox if that helps.
Can somebody please tell me in simple language whats wrong [comp03] [comp-hammer]

This may not be the answer to your problem, but someone posted a few days ago that Ancestry were down for some upgrading work, and consequently they couldn't access the site using the 'bookmark' in their computer's favourites file.
see: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14671

Are you using your favourites to get there? if so I'd try typing the web address in manually and see if that works.

Hi Wilma,

Just tried typing Ancestry in manually and that didn't work. The problem is that I can't access a lot of sites and have tried using Firefox and IE but neither will work.

Oh dear, I tried typing it in myself and got there OK, so it must be something more complicated.

I hope somebody comes along with an answer for you soon.

Hi Paula
Today I've tried again and not only can't I get Ancestry, Family Search & Ellis Island have disappeared too. Got no problems getting on TS, google, facebook, youtube etc just the important sites.
Whhooo - you are living dangerously there - TS is not an important site?????

Have you tried clearing out your cache and cookies? To clear these (i.e. cookies, browsing history, cache, etc.) -see
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How ... =n&s=cache
and
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Cle ... nt+History
(hope you can see those pages!! If not, tell us and we can maybe post the instructions )

Best wishes
Lesley

Oops what I meant to say was that TS is the only important site I can get into!!

Right Lesley - I've just cleared my cookies, cache & history and still nothing. Don't understand how everything could have been fine on Friday and now half the stuff I look at won't come up. Unless maybe the cat was fiddling while I was Away!!

OK, this is a bit of an odd way round but try typing or copy/paste the following number (with dots in the correct places, nae spaces) into your address bar, - does it take you anywhere?
204.9.225.200

That didn't work either. It came up with "waiting for www.familysearch.org" at the foot of the screen but after 15 minutes its still thinking about loading

Hi Paula,

What happens if you type the following into the address bar (the bar at the top with the web address in it)?

204.9.225.200

That is the IP address of http://www.familysearch.org and under normal circumstances the IP address will give you the same thing as the URL: http://www.familysearch.org .

If the IP address gets you through to familysearch and the URL does not, then there is a DNS (Domain Name System) issue. See what result you get before we go any further down that road.

All the best,

AndrewP
