I download legacy 7 duluxe the other month and have switched over to that now as my main program rather than family historian and doing t hings the way I was before is different. I have finally kicked my backside into gear about recording sources properly but I cannot seem to get a decent Scottish Source. I can get the English ones ok but when I try to make one for Scottish it does not ask me for a Parish etc.
Fair enough there are differences in how records are indexed between the two countries but last time I checked there were still parishes and counties in both of them.
Anyone got any hints for correcting this? Below are some examples:
4. England and Wales, marriage certificate for XXXXNAME1 and XXXXNAME2, married DATE; citing REF, Oct, Nov,
Dec quarter 19XX, Manchester South registration district; General Register Office, Southport.
5. Scotland, death certificate no. 61 (1921), XXXXNAME; digital image, GRO of Scotland, National Archives of Scotland and the Lord Lyons Office,
Scotland's People (http://scotlandspeople.gov.uk/).

Re: Legacy 7
Hi Andy
I use Legacy but I'm not quite understanding how you are working with the sources - generally speaking you can set these up any way you want.
I have a GROS "Master Source" reference to cover all Scots events, and then I copy and paste the detail from SP into the "Source Detail" box, where you can add any other detail that you want.
Are you setting up and using the Master Sources accessed through the "books" icon under each person? I prefer to use this manually rather than the new whizzy wizard thingy "source writer" which I find makes life more difficult - is this maybe what you are using?
Best wishes
Lesley

Re: Legacy 7
Hi Lesley,
I believe I am using the source writter.
For the English ones it was easy enough, all the little boxes were there to be filled in. I understand you can change the footnote etc by using over-rides.
For these I have setup - Add a new source -> Birth > follow it through and set up the record for a birth from GROS, rinse and repeat for marriage and death. Then from that I cite this source and it lets me put info about what I have found, or the detailed record.
Would you be able to give an example of one of your sources or a rough walkthrough how you set it up or source a record.
I admit sourcing hasnt been one of my strong points and now I am suffering for it.](./images/smilies/brick-wall.gif)

Re: Legacy 7
Hi Andy
I'm a bit lazy with sources - I add them, of course, but my thoughts are to get done with that bit a.s.a.p, thus my avoidance of the "source writer" !
I have Legacy set up so that I never see the source writer! Options > Customise > Sources > Basic Source system (bottom left) selected.
So then when I add some new info, I click on the wee books for that person, "Cite" my master source (or add a new one if it is a source I've not used before) then usually, because I'm a bit lazy about sources, as previously mentioned, I copy and paste what ever the info is for that source in the source detail box e.g. Master Source - GROS, detail pasted 01/11/1708 GULLAN DAVID HENRY GULLAN/ M Cupar /FIFE 420/ 0010 0323 - click to enter today's date and save and that is it over with! I know where the info is from, and hopefully anyone else looking at the data could work it out too.
Hope the above is able to be understood. It is probably the "lazy person's way to cite sources" but at least it means all (OK, most...
) sources are there. If I had to spend 5mins doing each one, I'd probably not bother.
As far as I remember there is a short video on sources on the Legacy web site,
http://www.legacyfamilytree.net/videos/ ... nners.html
- click on sources on the left menu
and there are instructions in "Help" on Legacy too. The Help section in Legacy is quite useful on the whole as things are explained reasonably clearly.
Best wishes

Re: Legacy 7
Hehe, you put me to shame. When i started out and even for a few years after I just added names and info with no sources unless it was something other than a BMD.
Its only since I got Legacy really that I decided to add stuff
Seeing as I am young and been off work recently I have the time
.... I hope anyway.
