BBC iplayer incompatible with Firefox

Post by Lorna Allison » Sun May 02, 2010 12:17 am

Hi

Since before Christmas I have been unable to run BBC iplayer. Eventually I paid a great deal of money to a chap who sorted a minor problem, installed the most recent version of Firefox (while assuring me that he thought IE was the best), found that iplayer still would not run and left assuring me that he would "ask around" and then come back and sort it out. I forked out the money (what a wimp) and despite phoning him several times he still has not found out what to do apparently. Needless to say I now find that "fixing" computers is more or less a hobby and not a necessary source of income. I should add that iplayer won't run on IE either.

Yesterday I was having trouble with Google maps as well and don't know if that could be associated too.

Anyone out there with any ideas that a technophobe just might be able to follow? Here's the problem: When I try to run iplayer this message comes up -

ASSERT in LSP

firefox.exe
Assert in LSP

g_socket_data.Lookup(s) = = O (sic)

capture\lsp\nolsp\wsp_patches.cpp:1313

Abort Retry Ignore

When I try to get rid of that notice and abandon the iplayer attempt, the whole thing just jams up and the only way to exit is by turning my laptop off (ctrl/alt/del won't work) Even when I switch off and then on again the bally sign comes up and I have to fiddle about again to get rid of it. I am afraid I am going to damage my laptop but every so often I have another go because I think that the good fairy might have come in the night and sorted it :-

Any help would be SO welcome.

Regards

Lorna

Hi Lorna

I'm not a tecchie person, but everyday I am able to watch BBC iplayer programmes using Firefox...so it can be done, though I'm still living in an XP world - what OS are you using??

Maybe try a search on Google for a similar problem; there may be solutions out there from people who have found the same issue. e.g.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/microso ... rning.html
Seems to be a "Google desktop" related issue as far as I've looked....

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Lorna,

I’ve no idea really, but if uninstalling Google Desktop doesn’t help you could see if you have the latest version of Adobe Flash player. http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

If things get really desperate you could install Google Chrome and see if that program works with BBC iPlayer and the other problem sites on your computer. (It’s a great little web browser) http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/google ... hrome.html

I have no problems either through Firefox or Google Chrome (love it) running XP.

I had a wee google and found this if you are running Vista. http://www.vistax64.com/network-sharing ... t-lsp.html

Annette

Hi Lesley, Alan, Annette

OH JOY =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Thank you so very much.

I uninstalled Google Desktop and immediately could play iplayer. I can't believe how clever you are. Thank you so very much.

All that money and he's clueless ](*,) ](*,)

Ah well, I'll put it down to experience - after I ring him.

Thank you again - so very much

(By the way, I'm not sure what not having "Google Desktop" will mean. I can still Google, obviously?)

Bye

Lorna :D :D :D :D

Hi Lorna

See here for what it is/does:
http://desktop.google.com/en/GB/

Desktop search
• Search your computer as easily as you search the web with Google
• Find and launch applications and files with just a few keystrokes

Sidebar with gadgets
• Add Google Gadgets to customise your desktop and iGoogle
• Get news, weather and more anywhere on your desktop

- I think you will manage to live without it! (Certainly easier than living without BBC iplayer! )

Best wishes
Lesley
