1881 Census Disks

Post by Jean Jeanie » Wed Oct 19, 2005 7:44 pm

Have had my discs for a few months and have always used them the same way. Insert the correct one alphabetically, type in name and d.o.b. +/- a few years, then search in the county I think they are in - usually I find them. Sometimes have to look in Scotland, generally and then narrow down.

However, last night I must have clicked on "something" and the top half of my screen displayed a rolling list of names to look at. This list actually showed the place of birth as shown on the census. So it actually shows up mis - heard names of places. This proved very fortunate for me as I knew he was born in Cromdale Inverness shire. The entry I saw on the screen was for Crondell. Inverness shire and the census place was Yorkshire. Clicked on it and it was my man.

Can't for the life of me replicate what I did to find this.

Help please.

Jean

I've had a look at the user's manual. It would appear that what I saw last night was the Index Pane.

It would also appear that I should see this every time, as the manual gives no instructions on how to enable/disable this.

I have only ever seen the Detail pane before, which is the list of names in chronological order.

Pages 6-8 of the manual refer to this.

Any suggestions?

Jean

Hi Jean,
I'd never noticed it before, but i can now see this index.
After your mention of it i tried to find it and accidentally came across it too!

You insert a disc into your CD writer and the open the reader,
then you select the 1881 census - click OK
this gives you a search box, but if you cancel this then all that shows
is 1881 British Census in large letters at the top.
If you use the scroll bar on the right side you appear to get ALL the names that are on that CD.
But they aren't exactly alphabetical - seem to be grouped together as similar spellings of the same name.
[except the beginning & end of the list, which look a right mess!]

Is this what you saw?

Jack

Hi Jack

Tried what you said and it didn't work!

But basically that is what I saw.

My discs are very new and running on viewer 4.0

I am so sure of what I saw because of the Cromdale/Crondell situation

You can scroll through the top section of the page and see birthplaces such as Crondell that you don't see on the Detail page.

Someone somewhere will know what's what..........I hope!!

Hi Jean,
According to the Help page, the Index Pane is the top half, and the Detail Pane is the bottom half of the screen.
Is yours split into 2 panes - ie separate top & bottom screens?

BOTH my Index Pane & Detail Pane always show the birthplaces & census place.
But it's only when i click on the "show details" icon (to the right of the binoculars) that i get the relationships & occupations on the Detail Pane.

Sorry if i'm confusing you - i just know i'm not explaining it very well.
Hopefully someone can!

Jack
ps, it's Viewer 4.0 i have too.

Hi Jack

this is very confusing.

I agree, the top half of the page is the Index Pane and the bottom half is the Detail pane(as per the user manual) and this is what I saw last night. Last night my screen was split in two, showing this (my finding accidentally)

But today and all the times before last night, I only saw the Detail Pane - a long list of names in chronological order.

Like you, I am probably not explaining this very well.

However, I am sure someone will be able to help us both!!!

Basically what I saw was so helpful. Seeing someone's birthplace as Crondell Inverness(instead of Cromdale) appearing in the York census. The information I entered (from memory) was only his name and y.o.b. +/- 1year.

See what tomorrow brings.

Jean

Hi Jean & Jack,

The dividing bar between the index and the detail section can be moved upwards or downwards. Is the dividing bar pushed completely to the top, therefore showing all the area as below the divide? (hence detail only)

If so, try to click on the bar and drag it to about the vertical centre of the page.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew

Read that in the user manual. Thought I had cracked it. Have tried clicking everywhere in the top of the screen and can't get anything to move down to show the Index pane

I found something useful as regards dodgy spellings with the disks - if you go to search/neighbour advanced query and then type in the first few letters of any word, it gives a list at the left of ALL words used in the census data. So if Achtergaven is listed instead of Auchtergaven, it gives you the spelling as it is on the census data, even if it's not strictly correct.
