Pocket Genealogist

Post by Ted » Sat Jan 14, 2006 5:07 pm

Hi Everyone

Santa was really good to me - brought a nice wee handheld PC - great for work stuff etc - but on the web I have found a product called Pocket Genealogist which is made for handheld PC's - they claim it is fully compatible with all the major Genealogy software packages (Legacy, Family Tree, Roots Magic etc to name but a few). The software can take GEDCOM files and has great capacity for carrying around all the info you wish you had at your fingertips when out and about searching for ancestors. Looks good but - before I pay for it - has anyone else used it and if so any opinions on how good etc?

Best regards

Ted

Hi Ted,
Can't help with an opinion on the software I'm afraid, but I'd be really interested to know how you get on with the handheld PC. I've often considered that one would be handy as it always seems no matter what notes you take with you there are always some other notes you wish you'd taken on trips to archives etc!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Everyone

Just a wee update - I bit the bullet and bought the software - got it on a download from the software developer and it cost $35 - which I think works out at roughly £20. The installation process was simple - the software is completely compatible with all of the major genealogy software programmes. I use Roots Magic - it let me do a straight import of all the RM files straight into the PDA (including fact notes) - it can import/export GEDCOM Files. I now have all of my geneology info on the device and available where ever I am. It automatically sincs with the main PC when you connect the two - which keeps the info current. I think it will prove its worth when visiting archives etc. So far no obvious downside.

Best regards

Hi Ted
Good to hear how you are getting on with it. Sounds like the ideal way to carry all the tree info about with you when visiting archives and libraries. The software seems very reasonably priced too. Thanks for the update!

Best wishes

Ted - you are so spoilt! Isn't technology now mind blowing / boggling? And the speed at which it's evolving! I got a (Finnish company) smartphone 7710 last November and they've already produced 2 future generations (they breed quicker than the McKays - and that's saying something :| ). I stood rooted in amazement when my son did a wireless (Bluetooth) transfer of a video from my phone to his laptop. So good on you Ted - thanks for sharing your story - you've inspired me to see what other applications are available.... hmmm this virtual private networking looks interesting. 8-[
