Contents of a GEDCOM file

Post by tass » Mon Mar 27, 2006 9:48 am

Hello there!!! Hope someone can enlighten me on this point. If I export a GEDCOM file which contains certs in the scrapbook area for each person, will these transfer along with the other data? The GEDCOM is being transferred to exactly the same version of Family Tree Maker 2006. Any advice would be most welcome.......thanks, Tass

Hi Tass
Can't help with FTM problems specifically, but I know in other progams when exporting a gedcom you can choose what to include or exclude - whether that's notes or images attached to people. If sending the gedcom to someone else, if you wished to include images you would usually need to send a copy of the images too along with the gedcom as the info in the gedcom, being a text file, only tells the family tree program where to find the image and the image name, it does not actually contain the image.

I'm sure someone familiar with FTM would be able to tell you where to find the options when creating a gedcom.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks, LesleyB. I'd never tackled sending such a file before and wondered why the certs were not there.......and the file was so much smaller than the original. I'd passed on the file with the certs separately, but thought it would save my friend some time if all those I'd placed in the scrapbooks were in situ when he added the GEDCOM to his computer. We learn something new every day, don't we!!!! Tass

Hi Tass
Glad it made things a bit clearer - I was concerned that I'd just muddied the waters even more

Best wishes
