Mapping Software

Post by Jamboesque » Sun Jun 11, 2006 11:29 am

Does anyone know of a source of software generated maps of Scotland.

They need not be too detailed as I would like to put electronic 'pins' to locate and identify places and other info. eg Family, when, what (B M D or Census).

I would like to trace my various families not only through time but also space. There appears to be several 'crossing points' where people met then moved on and it would kind of neat to map it out diagrammatically.

There are several specific areas that I'm interested in, Leith, The Orkneys,
Angus/Forfarshire, Clackmannanshire.

Any Ideas
I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!

Might I suggest 'Autoroute'

I have used it in many versions over the years. You can add a multitude of different push-pins to the map of your choice (any scale down to street level of any area in Scotland (or Europe if you wish). You can add text panels, colour areas (and find most places quite easily by name search).

I even paid for my copy  (Goes agin the grain, that does! :D )

Thanks for that idea, Dave. It never occurred to me that Autoroute would be the thing.

I'll just need to get a peek at a demo before coughing up the dough to buy it. Not that I'm stingy or that, just got to make sure it does what I want. 8)
