Images relating to Scottish Genealogy .....

Post by Rab » Sun Jun 18, 2006 4:19 pm

Hi all,

I have a request to make and hope someone can help me out. At the moment I am studying web design so have decided to put my new found skills into practice and build a personal website of my own. This site will not be a commercial site but rather a personal one hosted on free webspace.

I'm looking for any personal images of buildings related to Scottish genealogy. These must be your own and not taken from an existing website. In particular at the moment I'm looking for a pic of New Register House so if anyone has taken one or is planning to go there soon with a digital camera please let me know.

Although the I've already designed the site and still writing away at the content the pages themselves are a bit sparse and could do with some related images. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this

Hello Rab,

Upon just returning from my trip to Scotland, I have 475 pics of numerous sites and you can take your pick!!

Seriously, I have a great pic of the Mitchell and can send you a copy?

Regards

Hi Jean,

You may be disappointed if you are hoping for a good photo of NRH - for two reasons.

(1) It is a difficult building to get a decent view of the whole frontage. General Register House is in front of part of the frontage unless you can get close to NRH with a very wide angle lens. Other buildings prevent you going far enough back to get what should be the easiest view.

(2) For some time (probably over a year) the frontage of NRH has been shrouded in scaffolding and the front courtyard is full of builders' huts and building materials. As the main contractor for the works has gone into administration (receivership?), the work is liable to take much longer than planned - as per the minutes of the last SP User Group meeting. So there is no clear picture of the front of NRH likely to be had for some time. :(

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks for that Andrew. I knew about the construction...and the predicted delays....but still hoped there might be something photogenic about the place :? Maybe some indoor images would be possible instead..........

Best wishes
Jean

Go to Google, click on the images link and type in "New Register House" then search. The pictures that come up are mostly of the right building, although some are of General Register House (with the statue of Wellington on his horse on the pavement outside). Of the ones that are of NRH, none have the whole of the frontage. There lies a clue to the difficulty to achieve such a picture.

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/abotgros ... house.html (and click on the image for a close-up) shows the straight-on view of NRH, with the east section obscured by GRH. I think it should be symmetrical either side of the central front door - you will need to use your imagination to fill in the east part of the frontage.

As for taking photographs inside NRH, I think you would need to seek permission first.

All the best,

AndrewP

Apologies for the slow response but being a part-time web designer, full-time house husband and still making time to watch the World Cup is proving quite a juggling act. ;)

@marilyn morning- Thanks very much for your generosity. I will send you an email tonight once the kids stop jumping all over me. Your offer is very gratefully accepted.

@JustJean- Thank you for the offer. If I don't have an image by the time you go then that would be very much appreciated.

@AndrewP- Thanks again Andrew for the info concerning NRH. Although I'd prefer a scaffold free image I'd settle for one in any state at the moment and update the image at a later time.

I too noticed that alot of the images on a google search were of the old building as it had been my intent to find one and contact the owner for permission to use it. I've not ruled out asking the GROS site as a last resort but I think I know what the answer would be.

Hi Rab

Would a photo of Paisley Library and Museam interest you?

Best wishes

Rab,

You should ask GROS if you can use their photo. I got permission from them to include BDM's in my book.

Never hurts to ask.
