Computer Files

Post by Miss Poohs » Sat Dec 30, 2006 1:35 pm

Whilst at the Mitchell the other day (where I had the pleasure of meeting Jack, Davie & Maggie), I got to wondering on looking at the pile of sheets I call files, how you guys go about recording and filing your info.

I had started writing it all out, but nahhhhhhhh - it's no workin'.

Jack mentioned one or two genealogy software progs. I've never used any of these, and wonder if any of you do, and if so whch ones. :)

Well, I use Family Tree Maker which serves me quite well. However, I also have Legacy which I sometimes import my FTM stuff into to get slightly different facilities.

Got to say I prefer FTM though.

Shareware such as Brother's Keeper is also worth considering, see http://www.bkwin.net/

Hi Janice,
There was a wee discussion last May on TS about genealogy software.

Bob gave a couple of good links - well worth a visit.
Plenty to read!

I use Family Historian v2.3 and it is pretty good for me as it is more advanced than just a simple guided layout for people new to computers.

I also have a lever arch folder with all the certificates with individual summaries from my spreadsheet package on the fronts of the poly pockets. Half of it is organised so far but there is still a fair amount of paper in a single folder that is unsorted.
