GR messed up my tree

Post by Lorna Allison » Sat Jan 13, 2007 12:18 am

Hello All

If the following request for help is out of place, just give me a (gentle) wrap on the knuckles and I shall slink into a corner still wrapped in bafflement.

After one recent major success on GR in a year, I decided to update my family tree on their site as I had added about 500 names to it. I had previously noted that some of the original dates on my tree on GR were most peculiar and certainly not what I have in my FTM tree, so thought that might have been caused by GR updating during my long absence.

Anyway, I thought I would be very canny, remove tree entirely then add new tree. Result - even more silly dates and I can't edit them within GR. Simply WILL NOT save my edits (although it tells me all is saved).

I have been in contact with one "Rachel" until I am blue in the face to no avail.

Are they just hopeless? Are they having problems they don't want to tell me about? Has anyone else had this problem? OR - am I making some bloomer? I would really like to renew my sub at end of Jan. but don't see the point if I am showing a whole host of ridiculous dates.

In hope . . . . .

Lorna

Hi Lorna
I've not come across your particular problem but I do have a few problems with the site. I've certainly had problems when trying to edit dates - it is hugely frustrating at times.

Also another gripe is that quite a number of women on GR seem to be able to send messages under one surname whilst their tree is actually listed under a different surname, (I'm guessing its a married surname vs. maiden surname thing) so when they drop you a line and say "Can you let me see you tree?" I can't find them in my list of contacts (which runs to many, many pages  ), unless the surname they are writing about is very unusual... and heck., life is too short!

I can quite understand that if your dates are all askew, there seems little point....

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley

Thanks for that info. Obviously they do have issues on the site. I shall have to think about the way ahead for me. It's a pity because I was so thrilled to get that last contact, but I just think if people go into my tree and see things like children being born 100 years before their parents, they could be slightly put off :(

What a b****r - c'est la vie nowadays. Technology may not always work, but on the other hand what about that google earth scenario in today's paper where they tracked equipment lost in the Atlantic nearish St Kilda attached to a buoy, via Harris driven by the winds, U turn , then appeared on Stromness pier and finally to the garage of a skipper in Kirkwall! Bet that was a bit of a surprise for the old matey [-X

Once again thanks for your reply Lesley, good to know I am not alone.

Hi Lorna,
Regarding your problem with GR.
Recently I uploaded a Gedcom File from from FTM to GR as I had a lot of stuff on FTM and I wanted to bring GR up to date. The next time I went to GR I found that a lot of place of birth details were missing and there were some issues with editing.
The problem seems to be a conflict with the dating formats i.e. GR is not flexible enough to recognise other dating formats.
For example if you upload a date from a family record in the format such as 12 Dec 1899 from FTM to GR it will be recorded as such, but you then will have problems if you wish to edit that record because GR won't recognise the date and you then have to change the date to the 12/12/1899 format.
Regards,
Gordie

I couldn't even get my tree to upload, and nobody ever got back to me after I contacted them.

Hi Ninatoo and Gordie

Latest helpful hint from GR:

"Please send me specific examples of the dates you wish to change. I'll be more than happy to test this"........for the 4th time?

"I suggest that you try pressing CTRL and F5 at the same time. This will clear the cached pages and you will then see the most recent version of your tree. It could be that your PC was loading a previous version which is why you could not see any changes." ........but I have the tree up on screen which shows 788 people instead of the previous 175.

Och, I'll plaster away tomorrow with their CTRL and F5 but I am not hopeful. I just think they are needing to give their system a wash and brush up, if not a complete overhaul.

Still . . . I did find someone with a lot of Blackneys. :P
I think I shall probably opt for taking the rough with the smooth.

Regards

Lorna

Hi Lorna

I meant to reply this this a while ago. So here I am.
I have had some very good results from GR including a 12 match contact :D

My trouble with GR is that I cant look at the full trees, it keeps telling me to update my flash player, which I have done so many times I am going crazy. But everytime I try to look at full trees I get the same message.
