I received a private email from Andrew Davidson asking what steps I take to download directly into Legacy. He also suggested that I post this reply on TalkingScot so that others may view the information. I will post this in both the General Discussion and Computer & Software Shop.
A little info - I am running Windows XP with Legacy 6.0 Deluxe:
1. Open Scotlandspeople and select and image to view.
2. Select the 'Save' icon.
3. A dialog box will appear prompting you to name the image and to choose format (.tiff, .jpeg) etc.
***For my personal preference I usually download to a folder on my desktop before putting into Legacy. That way I know that I still have to input any pertinent information into the database. After I have done so, I then move the image into Legacy. I can then 'attach' the image to whomever I wish without having duplicate copies of the same image.
3a. If you know the file path go ahead and enter in the dialog box.
***I always use Browse. After selecting Browse another dialog box will appear.
1. Select the location you want to save the image.
2. When you name the image make sure you enter the file extension at the end of the file name (.tiff, .jpeg) etc., example - Borthwick, George Cooper.tif, otherwise it will be saved without a program associated with it and you will have to re-name/re-save once it is on your computer.
3. Select Save. That dialog box will close and return you to the previous one.
4. Select Ok. And there you have it.
***If you want to save directly into Legacy you must first have sub folders within Legacy already created. I have mine arranged by surname for photos and by document type i.e. births, marriages, deaths, census (year of cenus sub folders) etc. and then by surname within births, marriages, deaths, etc. but you can have these arranged however you wish. Here are some examples of my file paths and naming practices.
c:\Legacy\Pictures\Census\1841\Borthwick\Borthwick, George Cooper_2816_1841census_leg.tif
Saved in: C drive
Folder: Legacy
Sub Folder: Pictures
Sub Folder: Census
Sub Folder (by census year): 1841
Sub Folder (by surname within census year): Borthwick
File Name: Borthwick, George Cooper_2816_1841census_leg.tif
c:\Legacy\Picutres\Births\McMurtrie, Marion_274_birth_leg.tif
Saved in C drive
Folder Legacy
Subfolder Pictures
Subfolder Births
Subfolder (by surname) McMurtrie
File Name McMurtrie, Marion_274_birth_leg.tif
For the File Name I use surname, given names, the Legacy RIN, type of document, Legacy designater to show that I am adding to my Legacy database, file extension.
Once again, these are my personal preferences and you can do this any way you choose.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Hope this isn't too convoluted to follow.
Good luck and Happy Hunting...
Kelly
