Help With Legacy

Post by DavidWW » Mon May 16, 2005 9:29 pm

A friend has sent me report files produced by Lagacy, - an fdb, an FG, and and a TC file.

Can anyone offer help or advice on how I can open these when I don't have Legacy?

Legacy Files

Only suggestion I can think of would be to ask for the file to be resent as a Gedcom.

The "standard edition" is still free, and download-able from the Legacy website at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
(after the usual "registration", requiring a valid e-mail address. They will send you a password to allow you to install the software ... but I haven't received spam after registering there when I wanted to evaluate the package).

The only other alternative to the 2 listed above is to kindly ask the person to resend the legacy reports in pdf format. I just had a wee play and am pretty sure my sample got converted and would be viewable on any computer through adobe reader. They of course would have to have a pdf converter installed but I downloaded a freebie and use it all the time!

Jean

PS..or if I were a nice person (and you didn't want to incovenience them)....I could attempt to convert them for you if you forwarded them to me.......but.....no guarantees

Davie,

What genealogy program do you use? Since I use Legacy Deluxe I have many options for converting the file for you. If you want to import the file directly to your program I can convert it to Gedcom, PAF 2.1, PAF 3.0, PAF 4.0, and Clooz.

I can also generate reports in PDF, and Rich-Text Format.

Let me know if I can be of assistance.

Happy Hunting.....

I've been a Brother's Keeper (`shareware`) user for approaching 20 years, only reluctantly dragged, screaming into the `Windows World` as BK6 MSDOS gave me everything that I ever needed, especially in terms of the superb range of reports and charts that BK provides......

My only problem with BK at the moment is how to produce fanfold paper multi-page printouts from MSDOS BK6 from my new printer that will only `speak` to software on the basis of a USB connection instead of a parallel printer connection, in the situation where BKv6 MSDOS can't recognise a USB connection <sad g>.

Apart from that wee glitch I cannot emphasize too highly my opinion of BK, particularly in terms of the report and tree print options!,

Davie, Davie, Davie,

I'm too young to hear about your personal problems, and the language, parrallel printers and usb connections, what's this world coming to?

Actually, I'm very glad you are happy with your BK, I wasn't trying to sell you on Legacy, only offering to convert the files so you can view them.

The problem is that the parallel port dot matrix printer that had served me well for many a year went terminally U/S a year or so ago, and, after a long, difficult hunt on the web I did find a replacement dot matrix, fan-fold paper capable, replacement dot-matrix printer, but it was only USB capable, not LPT capable, never mind the fact that it "eats" ribbons at the rate of one per 10 days, fortnight at best, at Oz$15 per ribbon, and the fact that fan fold paper ain't getting any cheaper...............

Whereas laser and inkjet printers get cheaper by the day, dot matrix printers become more expensive ..........................

Davie

PS Anyone know of laser/inkjet printers that can handle fan-fold paper ??........

Hi David

The Canon BJC-5500 and Epson 1520 inkjets can handle this paper and I'm sure there are others - possibly laser ones too.

A search for "inkjet" or "laser" and "tractor feed" should find some options.
