Access to view my tree on GR

Post by AnneMT » Sat Apr 14, 2007 10:58 pm

:D I have had a lot of help from some GR members, over the years, but have been irritated, in the past, by some people asking to see my tree . No details are given of a name, dob etc. of the possible connection. My first response is to ask who, in my tree, he/she has a connection. On some occasions, "no response is the loud reply". :?

One member in particular asked to view my tree. As usual, I asked which relative she was interested in. She replied that she was just interested in a particular surname in my tree. Sometime later, by coincidence, she asked for access again, but did not give the relative's name. I asked the same question as before - still no response. The member's surname was different on this occasion, but the christian name was the same. Perhaps she had married, or divorced. What she obviously did not realise was that when her e-mails were forwarded to me from GR, they were not shown as different members, but as the same member. Did she think I would not notice??

 When contacting a possible relative, I always (hopefully) uncheck the box allowing access to my tree. I think this should, by default, be left unchecked. Inexperienced members may not notice this. I have had access to trees, which I am not interested in, for several years.

I never give access to my GR tree, but direct people to my tree on Rootsweb, which gives privacy to living members. My only complaint here is, that Ancestry then take this info,(that I have worked hard on, and charges other people for the privilege.

Sorry for the rant folks. Been wanting to get that out of my system for ages. :D

Thanks Annette for reminding me to clear my tree.
I have only just joined GR recently, and have made three definite distant cousins. After reading recent horror stories, I will not be entering my complete tree.
I have entered what was relevant to each person, and deleted after each contact. Must get back in there and clear the branch.

Hi all

I contacted GR about this when they first put the "open tree" on default - I've posted on other threads re their response, suffice to say it wasn't favourable.

But, and I only found this out recently from a genuine relative, if you go into My Details (I think that's where it is - I'll check and edit if I'm wrong) there is a "hide living relatives" option.

I agree with all you've said btw. And just to illustrate the needlessness of showing your entire tree, I was contacted last week by someone through GR and in the space of that few days we have shared a HUGE amount of info and solved a barrowload of problems with neither of us needing access to the other's tree. There's no need, when most of the stuff is irrelevant to the other party and the relevant bits can be shared by other means without muddying the water.

In fairness to GR though, I and my fabulous new contact would not have achieved what we have without the site.

Best wishes

Later : it's in My Account Details, last line of Your Personal Details - you can hide individuals born in the last 120 years with no death date
