Oh no, not again
Hi all,
I won't be around as much for a while as my computer crashed this morning. As it won't even go to safe mode I think it is a serious error and I may well lose all my data. Of course my tree was lost (2600 names and copious notes, SP documents, photos, etc.) Fortunately I have my tree online and recently backed up my gedcom files, and I sent them to my mum as well in case anything happened, but of course I didn't back up everything did I? All my photos are gone and I can probably get the old family photos resent to me, but I lost a lot of recent photos of my kids, as I had not backed them up. My email contact list may be gone too...not to mention all my favourite sites and on and on.
I hate when this happens...I just hope it isn't as serious as I think it is.
Nina

Hi Nina
It is getting relatively inexpensive to buy storage devices that connct via USB port. Sorry it is after the event, but do buy one. I back up 3 things - family history files, one directory with 50 sub directories
, email directory and the household accounts (I don't really care if I lose them, except they are very useful at tax time!).
Good luck, it may recover

Hi Nina,
I know how it feels when that happens. The first time it happened to a client I was lucky enough to be able to take the hard disk out and connect it as a second disc on another PC. As a slave disc it doesn't require to boot up, so I managed to copy all his stuff onto the main disk.
The second time wasn't so lucky. That time the disc was fried after a power surge.
When you boot up and keep pressing the key to go to the screen to chose safe or normal mode, does it also offer "start in last good configuration"? That might be worth a try.

I have every sympathy, Nina. I lost quite a bit last year when my pc gave up the ghost. All my records were on floppy discs and as the new one only has cd's I had to get a friend to copy them all. Of course, I wasn't up to date - always putting it off to another day - and lost quite a bit of my newer research.
Reading your message made me realise that I am back to my lazy tricks again! I have just saved my 'vital' information so,
"Thanks for the reminder".

Hi Nina
My heart bleeds for you.
With luck Mary's suggestion might work. When mine crashed it was the motherboard which left a fully functional hard drive which I slaved onto my new PC. Now all my Family tree stuff is on the slave drive and photos are on the primary drive where it is easy to back up onto a CD. or 2 or 3.
There will be lots opf spelling mistakes as we all keep our fingers crossed.
Whose supperstissues ? Moi ?
