OE removed "unsafe" attachment

Post by Muriel » Tue Apr 24, 2007 1:54 pm

Can some computer literate person explain how I get into an attachment that OE is telling me it's removed because it's unsafe?

I know it's safe - DavidWW sent it to me as part of his RCE exercise & he wouldn't - would he  Unfortunately my only other email account is a hotmail one which doesn't allow attachments.

Hi Muriel,

I'm hoping other OE users can help you here as I haven't used it for years so don't know how it handles this kind of thing.

Maybe you could ask David to resend it in a zip format. That might get past the screening. Alternatively, maybe he could pop it into the gallery until you manage to save it from there.

Never thought of the Gallery.

See the RCE image just uploaded.

It wouldn't have been my first choice either, David. I've been wheeching off emailed images to a cousin and he's never had any stopped by his email program.

Maybe there's a way to add "safe" sender addresses in Outlook Express as there is in Outlook.

Any users who might know?

I used to have this happen in my old workplace and it was a security setting in OE that needed to be changed. Emanday's suggestion of zipping the file will probably work as I seem to remember it depended on the file extension name of the attachment. In OE from the menu try TOOLS/OPTIONS/SECURITY and one of the options in there should need ticked or unticked to fix the problem. The file though will have to be recent.

I encountered this not too long ago as well. Apparently the way to get around it is for the sender to change the file extension to one Outlook deems safe. I forget what the allowable extensions are. Possibly .jpg, but I'm guessing. Then you save the attachment to your computer and change the extension back to whatever it really is before opening the file. (Using save as, I suppose.)

I don't know if your hotmail account is set up differently from mine, but mine does allow attachments as long as they're not executable files. Images should be okay.

Murie

I use OE all the time and never came across this problem. It could be that your security settings are set to high as has been metioned. My security setting is set to "internet" You can check this by opening OE clicking tools, then click secrity, it will show you your secutity level setting.
I use hotmail also, but dont like the way they handle attachments.

I use hotmail all the time & don't have any trouble with attachments. I simply download and save them as I do if I receive mail as an attachment through eudora. You could try using eudora instead of Outlook - it causes me no problems at all. I stopped using outlook many years ago when it seemed to be the point of attack of hackers/spam senders.

My (free) hotmail allows up to 10mb in attachments - are others different?

Thanks for all the suggestions - I have now altered my security settings & will investigate other email options.

David, I can't find the upload to the Gallery - what is it under?
