Presenting a family tree

Hi all,

At the moment I'm near to completing a family tree for my daughters. It's been done solely in PSP and A2 in size. My thinking behind it was that I find tree produced with genealogy software are great for speed but restrictive by nature. So I have this tree which shows their cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. going back 5 generations with photographs of the individuals where they could be found.

It's taken alot of time and I've put in alot of work but the one thing I didn't give much thought to was what I am going to do when it's complete. I'm wanting to display it in some way and was originally going to just get it printed off as a photograph and then frame it. That will though fade with time.

Any suggestions on what I should do next would be mst welcome.

Hi Rab,

I can't remember where you can get this done, and I don't think it's cheap, but there is a method of thermal transfer onto canvas (or any other surface for that matter).

That said, at A2 size it would take a drum scanner to import the image in the correct format and, as far as I know, you're only likely to find that in a professional printers.

I wouldn't worry too much about a photographic copy fading these days. The new inks they use are reckoned to be very long life.

Also "Gel Mounting" or Perspex Reverse Mounting. Its used a lot now in photography. This isnt cheap but does have a 90% UV inhibitor so fading over a very long period of time is minimal, if thats one of your main concerns.

Local printers would give suggestions and prices. They can print onto a variety of qualities of paper or as a banner. There are also specialists such as www.familytreeprinting.co.uk or www.genealogyprinters.com though these might use their own standard layouts.

The simplest way to display it would be as a poster or even as wallpaper. Alternatively you could mount it onto a board or have it professionally framed.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll look into them all. I should have said in the first post that I am looking to do it on the cheap otherwise my wife will string me up.

So I'll probably get a big photo done for £8-£9 online for the time being. In the future though I would like to get it done properly so the other suggestions will be useful.

Another option is to create an actual book. I have seen some great books that people have created from photos and print files. Macs have a specific program and easy link for it, but it can be done from any PC. I've never done it myself, and rather than recommend one company over another, I would just say to google "create a book from own photos and files" , and you get many different options to explore. Some are pricey, but some are a lot more reasonable than you would imagine. I think anyone would find it a prized pocession, and you could fit more details on pages opposite a photo than you could trying to think of what to leave out for something that had to fit on a wall. And since the photos are under cover most of the time, they wouldnt fade.
Just a thought ...

Yes I agree. That is something I plan to do in the future but I really need more than just the inofrmation I have before doing that. One person I am in contact with sent me some extracts from a book she's written which included one of my ancestors and I was blown away with it. It was all about her journey from Scotland to NewZealand in the 1870s and then settling there.

Unfortunately for me at the moment I have very few photos and only basic information. As I said though it's defintely something I would like to do in the future. At this point in time I do plan to write about the relations I do know as people so there is some record of that to be handed down.

Rab,

I know from previous correspondence that Glasgow is pretty local for you so can I make this suggestion:

Miller Reprographics (Charing Cross) or Service Point (also Charing Cross) will print out your tree up to any size you want.

They both do a lot of Planning/Architectural drawing copies which are usually A0 & A1, B & W and colour.

It would be worthwhile giving them both a wee phone and asking about prices, formats etc.. From what I've heard, an A1 B & W copy is only a couple of quid.

I would imagine you've spent a lot of time on producing your tree so it would be nice to have your designs and ideas reproduced rather than something which is pretty much standardised.
