Problem with size!

Post by fmackay » Sun Jul 01, 2007 12:35 pm

Thanks to my daughter mucking about with trying to download her photos from her camera, now every time I open my pictures, certs etc they are all huge and fill the whole screen. I have nothing on top or bottom of screen to edit them and I have to do ctrl alt delete to come out of the picture etc. I've tried right clicking but it doesn't help.
What has she done and what can I do!! It's driving me crazy.

What program is opening the pictures? There should be a title bar (blue strip) along the top of your screen which should give some clues! Once we know that we can work it out from there.

Best wishes

Hi Lesley
There's nothing at the top of the screen - just picture of certificate. I usually open them in "Imaging"? from the drop down box or sometimes they opened as soon as i doubleclicked on them, but my daughter was mucking about with adobe photoshop. Sorry I haven't a clue so i'm not much help

Hi Fiona
Down the bottom of your screen, along the task bar, when the image is open there should be a button - agian, it should mention the name of the program wich is currently open.

When you have the file open, try the Esc key: top left of keyboard - that may get you our of the current view. Please try it and report back!! You may be able to find out what program it is that way.

What you could try is instead of double clicking on the icon of the image, try a right click on it and then "Open with..." You should see a list of programs which can open that type of file.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Fiona,

A couple of things to try:

If this is within Internet Explorer
<Shift><F11> = exit full screen mode
<F11> = enter full screen mode

If not that, try <Alt><tab> to switch between running programs, and it should show you what the running programs are.

Are you running Windows XP? If yes, then <control><alt><delete> should bring up Task Manager. Then select the "Applications" tab. That should name all the programs that are running. See which one(s) appear to be drawing/image programs. The offending program can be halted from that list with <end task>.

All the best,

AndrewP

Another way into the situation is as follows ..........

It's always possible that you darling daughter's download activities have reset the programme that your 'puter uses by default to open images.

Soooo. ....... run Windows Explorer. Go to a directory that has images, and right click on one of the filenames, - jpg, tif, or whatever.

You'll then see a long menu.

Click on "Open With". This will show a list of programmes that your 'puter has been told by Windows, the camera, you or dochter to add to the list of allowable programmes.

At the very bottom of that list, there's a "Choose Programme" option. If you click on that you can see what other programmes can be used; and you can also set a particular programme to be the default in Windows Explorer when you click on the image file name, - I use Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, - if that's not on your list, you can add it by browsing for that software.

I use Photoshop all the time and even in full screen mode there is still usually menu bars etc, so I cannot understand why you aren't getting them. If she has somehow mucked that up, try hitting F on your keyboard and see if that takes it back to the correct view. If it does, and you have the Photoshop screen, click on View, Screen Mode, Standard Screen Mode.

Also, if you don't want to open image files in Photoshop, right click on any image file and choose Open With, Choose Program and click on your preferred image viewer's name. Check the box that says "always open these files in this program". You'll have to do that with one .jpg & one .tif file to make sure both these types always open in the image viewer you like.

Then - tell your daughter not to do it again

Added later - Now I'm off to try and figure out how she did do it

Hi everyone
Well I think I've sorted it temporarily for now - by opting to open the files etc in imaging preview it comes up as a normal image with options at the top. In imaging it is still huge so will just leave it for now.
have had great fun fidning things on the pc that I didn't know existed so it has been a very informative afternoon.
thanks to all who tried t help - my daughter has apologised for doing what she did even although she doesn't know what that was!
cheers
Fiona

Well Fiona,

I've tried all sorts of things to duplicate the effect she left you with and can't do it.

If she should remember, could you let us know how she did it? Just out of curiousity and it may come in handy for future reference
