Family Historian

Post by wini » Thu Jul 26, 2007 12:01 pm

I need a great deal of help once again.
Just when I think I am learning something I end up all confused again

I have changed computers and I have changed from Brothers Keeper to Family Historian.
The data from the old computer was transferred on to the new one by the Computer shop.
When I got it home I couldn't find BK so I thought I would start again and purchase Family Historian recommended by my B.I.L
Did that and started entering data in the Property Dialog.
Came back to it this evening and couldn't find the entries I had made.
I decided to leave it and start again in the morning when my mind was more agile (not that it is ever very agile)

Thought I would look somewhere else and see if I could find the old BK Data and Lo and Behold I found a gedcom file which was now in Family Historian.

How did that get there?
I am totally confused can some help me with Family Historian.
I believe it is very good but it may be too smart for me.

Thanks anyone

Family Historian unlike some genealogy programs uses a gedcom file as its primary format.

When you entered the data into FH and completed using the program it is possible that this is how the gedcom file you refer to was created

FH also has a very active and friendly user group available online and various bits and pieces can be downloaded.

One such very useful tool is "gedcom census" which enables you to input census records very easily and quickly.

No-one's brain is, Wini. We are far more intelligent

As I used to tell some of my PC-feart clients, "A computer is just an incredibly stupid box of wires - without you to tell it what to do, all it can do is sit there with it's thumb in its mouth".

FAMILY HISTORIAN

Mary,

I think that is the trouble, I am not in the least scared of the blooming things and I just keep pressing on keys and clicking on other things when I don't have a clue what I am doing.
The poor Techies at the computer shop just shake their heads when I ring with yet another query.

I WILL NOT BE MASTERED BY A COMPUTER. (HOPEFULLY)

Techies ALWAYS shake their heads. It's their way of displaying their "so-called" superior knowledge.
