I got your G.V. info from Irish origins. Regarding anc.co.uk. --er... not in my opinion for this area. My subscription ran out last year, and I found nothing that would help me. ( English census-wonderful!!)

I wouldn't discount C of Ireland and Protestant records for the area, see first link. Mine changed from presbyterian to catholic, only when a nearby church opened. (Well that what it looks like!! ) Again, which denomination had the best soup kitchen in that terrible time period. Just keep delving, the more you find out about the history and geography of the area the better.

You can get the tithes for the area at your local L.D.S. centre , take advice on which films to order. As these are only land records you won't get relationships , similar to G.V. but earlier.

Sorry, if this post is a bit rushed-- got to go to work.

Hi!
I noticed the name Gillan, and felt I must tell someone. One of my maternal great grandmothers was Mary Millicent Gillan. She was married to Patrick Logue, and as far as I know lived in Clydebank, in Scotland. This might not be the case, however. It could be that their daughter, my grandmother, Jane(Jeannie) Logue was the one who came to Scotland. Jeannie was married to James Harkin(s), and I believe that they all originated in Donegal.

I am having the greatest problems tracing any of them, but I shall keep trying.

Thanks in advance for any help that might be forthcoming

Hi Ann, This looks like your family in the 1881 census.

Dwelling: Main St Davies Land
Census Place: Old Kilpatrick, Dumbarton, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203552 GRO Ref Volume 501 EnumDist 12 Page 1
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Jane GILLAN W 55 F Ireland
Rel: Head
Mary GILLAN 18 F Duntocher, Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Mill Worker
Hugh MC BRIDE U 46 M Ireland
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Labourer
Patrick LOGUE U 24 M Ireland
Rel: Boarder

Mary was born in Duntocher in 1864 under the spelling GillOn. BUT she married in Camlachie in 1884 to Patrick Logue. (same parents as birth cert), under the spelling GillEn.

Their daughter Jane Logue was married in 1910 back in Duntocher, Old Kilpatrick to James Harkins.

If you have any bother finding these certs on S.P. let us know, and help will be given to find them.

P.S. Patrick Logues parents were named on his marriage cert as Denis Logue and Margaret McBride, and an I.G.I parent search throws up a sister for Patrick, born in 1865 Rosguill, Donegal.

This link tells you where it is.

Hi Ian,

Thank you so much for all that wonderful information.

How would I go about getting hold of the marriage certificate for Jane and James Harkins? This would give me Jane's father's name and her mother's maiden name, which I do not have at present.

Thanks again

Hi Ann, First of all you will have to register with Scotlands People. (Link at top of the main Talking Scots page.) Then pay your 6 pounds for 30 credits.

Click on Search the Records, then Statuatory Marriages. Then search for

James Harkin* and J Logue and you should get only one result. Click View to see the entry below. (one credit) . Then click view to see the whole image.(5 credits).

1910 HARKINS JAMES LOGUE JANE OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0154

Happy hunting. If you can't master the searching right away, come back and let us know again. Someone will help. It's worth reading all the instructions though.

Hi Ian,

Thank you for all that. I will show it to my husband, and he will do the necessary for me. He is much more computer literate than I am.

It is so great to be moving with my part of the tree. His has been going 'great guns' for ages, but then he's an Englishman. Nuff said!

Thanks again
