Hmmmm...... €190 equates to about £127.
Take off, pure guess, £15 for associated expenses, and there's £112 left.
In Scotland, depending on the hourly rate charged that would equate to somewhere between 5 and 8 hours (and remember that part of that will be required to write a report).
But there I come to a shuddering halt as I have no way of assessing if that number of hours is reasonable or not for accessing the information supplied.

Hi David,
Anyway you look at it, it was expensive, and don't forget I waited just over 8 month for a reply.
I supplied quite a lot of information, therefore it was not a start from scratch search.
Regardless of the cost and the wait, I was prepared to pay for an advance on what I had, with no web avenue for real Irish research, I don't think I had any other options.
What I really feel annoyed about, is the vague reply, ie., they have found marriages for three of the seven Thornton children, why not say which three, then I could decide if I wanted to purchase one or even all three, presently I have to purchase all three, and they may not be the line I am following.
I have emailed the research centre, outlining my displeasure, but I will probably have to wait several months for a reply.
When I research back in Scotland, I am finding most of my ancestors originate in Ireland, to be honest, I don't think I can afford to chase ancestors in Ireland.

Kathy,
Going on the information you gave - you were definitely badly treated. Bad as things are here, if you had gone to the parish church, they would have given you most of that information. I have always found them helpful (Only exception was one bishop who forbade any priest in the diocese to give out information!). Also with that information searching the records should not have taken more than a few hours. Usually the problem is that you don't know for example as in my case, what happended to Joseph Wright after his birth in 1850 - did he marry die, emigrate, etc. If you don't know the parish you have to search every parish quarterly for every year. Very often people just know the county but you knew the actual parish - no excuse!

ps - if you need research done in Ireland, I would be inclined to contact the Gilbert Library or the Genealogical Society of Ireland. Those local FHS are commercial enterprises staffed by people on back to work allowances. Some may be good (I got great information from Laois/Offaly for 60 irish pounds a few years ago.) but most I'd avoid.
