Call me naive but why is religion taken in a British census? I don't recall ever being asked that or asking that when I was an enumerator.
I can speculate as to why this would pertain to Ireland but I am shocked by that one.
I know the Canadian Censuses have that question too.

Hi Joette,

The religion question must have been unique to Ireland at that time. None of the 1841 to 1901 UK censuses (for Scotland) asked that. The forms for Scotland were definitely different from those used in England, and presumably Ireland. The question about speaking Gaelic, or Gaelic and English would not have been used in England.

The 2001 UK census asked your religion. I cannot remember for sure the previous ones, so I don't know when that question was added to the UK census.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi again John,

Don't know if you've seen this but its an interesting story about Larne and why so many people from Ballymena ended up there. Also mentions Pound St where Margaret McCrae was in the 1901 Census.

Meant to post this the other day, but my 'puter crashed

There was never a question on religion in British censuses, but there was in Ireland. See the image below, 3rd column from the left (4th if you count the line numbers column), headed "Religious Profession", - "profession" in the sense of profess, to affirm a faith.

Hi John,

Andrew McRea married Mary Leith at Ballymena Registrar's Office, parish of Kirkinriola, Ballymena, Co. Antrim, on September 2nd 1886. (Source: www.emeraldancestors.com)

Also, for post 1911 census, if the couple were Protestant, you could try to locate them in 1912 at the Ulster Covenant website at http://www.proni.gov.uk/ulstercovenant/index.html

Hope this helps!

Chris :)
