Hi Helen,

Don't give it a second thought. I throughly enjoyed reading about your adventure to the causeway, especially the four leaf clover. After rethinking my previous comment, I was told it was four houses for rental on the farmland that Adam once worked. But its good to hear that the causeway cottages are a friendly place to visit.

I am planning a return trip to Ireland myself mid week round about July in an effort to trace my family roots. Firstly I have to find out where in Londonderry they originated
Helen bring along that four leaf clover and maybe it will bring you some good luck with your research.

Regards
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

I would certainly like to hear more stories like that. Most of the histories of the past are about Kings & Queens, etc. The ordinary person is practically ignored.

Regards
Sheila

Hi Sheila,

There's a total of 12 letters, with Adam's being one of them. I'll post the first letter in a short while. (need to scan it first or I'll be here for an hour typing it in  )

Hi Marilyn,

What a wonderful find. The Rev. Hamilton has certainly drawn a vivid picture of your ancestor’s life that ended in tragedy, but a life filled with endurance and perseverance to keep going…it was like watching a movie in my mind. I also enjoyed reading the other pages, I felt I was getting a first hand view. I don’t have any information on my own ancestor’s lives in Antrim but now I know what life was like for some of their fellow countrymen.

You’ve been given a great gift that I’m sure you will cherish always…thank you for sharing it with all of us and I look forward to reading any other letters you may have.

Regards,
Anne H

Hello Anne,

I agree these stories certainly paint a very vivid picture of the hardship our relatives had to endure. It makes modern day life, fail in comparison.

It was my pleasure sharing these letters and I'm pleased to hear that you're enjoying them. Of course I'll post the others, need to get my scanner warmer up first

I have another interesting discovery found in a book of "Argyll Shipwrecks" which lists another relative of mine Thomas Morning, only in the book his name is transcribed as Thomas Mornan. Thomas's dc supports that its him alright. I'll post the info regarding Thomas, on another thread. This book was also a gift from my cousin.

Regards
Marilyn

Note: Due to the size of these files, I'll only be leaving them in the gallery for a few weeks. If you're interested but don't have the time to read them, then print off a copy for a rainy day.

To close out this chapter of my Morning family.

Ulster J. Archeology 1858

Fairy Annals of Ulster - No 2

The following annals, which terminate those collected at the Giant Causeway, were communicated by an old man an woman, descendants of "Adam Morning" whose melancholy story is told by Hamilton in his "Letters concerning the Northern Coast of Co. Antrim."

To judge by outward apperance, the family circumstances are not in a more flourishing condition than they were when first noticed by Hamilton in 1784. But the realities of life, adverse as they may have been, have left the romantic element unsabdued in those ancient Mornings of the Causeway, who smiled scorn fully at the legends of the guides, as gigantic fictions, but whose faith in "Grogans" and "fairies" was a firm and undoubting.

Oh Marilyn   what a wonderful memento to have.I was ever interested in the history of ordinary folk.At school when Kings &Queens were mentioned I used to think "but what was life like for the other folk"
It was as always from the view point of the educated(mainly well-off) & you know what they say about the victor writing the story.
This seems to be a fair account-not decrying a young man for his foolish inexperience or blaming the Father for the vagaries of the weather.
Any hints as to how the Morning name was given to the family? I am imagining some great event/feat at daybreak!

Hi Joette,

In Dr Hamilton's letter above he mentions its a given name. If only the good Doctor had mentioned who gave it? We're not sure of its origin.
