The Seminar

Post by Wee Ann » Mon Mar 05, 2007 11:25 pm

Hi All,

I have been watching with interest the the planning and plotting of this fascinating affair. There is no way in the world that I would be able to attend. Not only the distance, but I will be at my granddaughter's wedding on the day :D .

My father's father was Irish, and to make things more interesting, he changed the spelling of the family name, either on coming to Scotland or when he married my grandmother. Tracing back on that line is not an easy task. :?

I hope you all have a great time, and learn a lot. I cannot promise to be thinking of you all, all of the time, but I will give you a thought now and then

All the best

Ann

Dear All

Have updated the parking information - see the announcement at the top of the page.

The programme for the day is pretty well organised, barring accidents ... and we hope to cover lots of the basics. We're planning a break around lunch time and folks can eat, chat and have coffee (there's a student common room on level 5 which we'll be able to use).

Before the break at lunch time, we plan to ask for topics that folks might want to cover during the questions later in the afternoon, and we hope that one of us will be able to help. Most of the information will be in the form of PowerPoint presentations, and so we'll be able to email these to all who can't make it. There will also be some paper-based info, but I hope to scan this after the event and so email to those not attending in person.

My sister has "volunteered" to collect the names of those attending on the day and also their email addresses and cash!

This is one of those ideas which seemed great while it was the dark days of November, but now it's getting closer ....

I think it might be a good idea to post a brief report of the day on TS when it's all over, and I hope that someone remembers to bring a digital camera so we can send photos to Marilyn!

I'd like to thank all who've helped with the organising and with suggestions for the day, and hope at we can at least answer some questions and provide some sources for people to try for themselves. It's not possible to solve the problem of searching for Irish ancestors in one day, but at least it might be a starting point ...

(Thanks to: Christine, Linda, Marie, David, Morag, me(!), TS admin folk for support, and not forgetting Marilyn - our banker in the USA), and the rest of you who've been encouraging us along with your posts.

See you on Saturday. If anyone urgently needs to contact me about Saturday, the best way is via my work email. See the contacts box on the University main web page.

Liz

PS - Don't make a mistake on Saturday and go to the other genealogy course which is running in the same building! Follow the TS signs!!

Well one of my ancestors married someone with your current surname - so we'll definitely need to say hello :?

Sheena

By the way Liz - are we having name badges so that we know who's who?

Hi Liz,

What began as a request to post your suggestions to help members along with their Irish relatives, has now turned into this seminar. A big THANK YOU LIZ, for taking the time to organize this event!!! Have a wonderful time everybody....

Regards
Marilyn

To Liz and all her helpers in setting up and carrying out the plan for Saturday. [scotland-flag]

Well done! You've certainly got a 'hit' on your hands. I can't believe it has rolled around so quickly either, Liz. Good luck on Saturday to everyone involved. Hope you learn a lot, everyone have safe journeys!

Looking forward to the pictures and notes.

All the best,

Am working away tonight listening to the footie on the radio ... sorting out stuff for Saturday.

Thanks to Sheena for offering to come in early on Saturday to do the name tags!

Am going to go home now and get a pizza on the way!

Have photocopied some info to handout on the day.

Would all who are coming please bring along any reference material they think might interest others - for example maps, photos, stories, books, newspapers, books etc.

Christine, Linda, Morag and myself are going to bring bits and pieces that we have, so all can have a look during the breaks.

Thanks to all wh've been helping in the background, in particular Christine's pal Linda - I've never even met her and she's beavering away on a PowerPoint presentation.

For those of you who don't have Power Point on PCs, I will save the presentations in some other format for emailing to you.

Cheers!

Liz

PS - Might go home via the wine shop!!

Liz and all

On my four branches even with those that have been traced back to the 1500s and 1600s, I can't find anything other than Scottish roots, so am not really into Irish research and won't be joining you.

But, have a great day on Saturday! I look forward to hearing all about it

Best wishes

Catriona
