Thanks, we got stuck in Dundee for a while, the first coach was full so we had to wait on the next one. Also screaming weans don't help things. :D

Great photo and what a happy looking group...you all seemed to enjoy the day and it's great to be able to put a face to a name...for some of you anyway.

I'm getting my dancing shoes dusted off already. Anyone for a Dashing White Sergeant or a Gay Gordons??

Having come down in the megabus I have to say that trains definitely have my vote, even if it did cost me £40 to get home!!

Some comments were made on Saturday about a TS research trip to Ireland in the future.

It intrigued me to see how much this could cost.

Based on filling a 10 seater minibus, it looks to me that the cost per individual would be between £350 and £500.

This includes minibus hire (including CDW etc., & diesel), ferry Stranraer - Belfast & return (Troon and Larne to be investigated, but unlikely to be that different in overall cost terms), and 7 nights in a hotel at an assumed £40/night, which probably means sharing twin rooms.

The group would have an interesting purchasing power in terms of 11 bednights (10 + driver) in case anyone is wondering about a price level of £40, and that would be for several nights in both Belfast and Dublin.

As regards hotels, there needs to be a balance between the most economic cost achievable, and the locations in terms of the distance between the hotels and the various institutions and libraries in Belfast and Dublin. In other words a return journey of, say, total 2 or 3 hours or more per day could get a bit wearing :!:

The cost does not include meals or anything not listed above.

As far as I can see from a Google, there's no need for any particular licence in terms of driving a 10 seater minibus.

Possible schedule.......

Sunday: travel Glasgow to Belfast (via Stranraer or Troon, and maybe Larne)

Mon/Tues/(Wed) PRONI, GRONI etc., Belfast

Tues or Wed evening: travel Belfast to Dublin, - it's a comfortable 3 hour drive, maybe a wee bit longer with a comfort stop.

(Wed)/Thurs/Fri GRO, National Library, etc., Dublin

Sat: travel Dublin to Belfast

Sun: travel Belfast or Larne to Scotland.

On first glance, the ferry timetables on a Saturday are such that it might be a bit pushed to catch a Belfast or Larne ferry back, and make it across the North Channel to Scotland at a time of day resulting in a reasonable hour back in Glasgow area, never mind onward travel, hence the Sunday ferry travel option.

Dublin - Liverpool on the Saturday might at first appear attractive, but then it's a much longer drive back north................

Up to my retiral a couple of years ago, I was in Belfast 15 to 20 times a year, so know the local geography well, and would be happy to advise on locations, hotels, and travel times.

I was also frequently in Dublin in the same period, which is a much more complicated city in terms of travel times between locations.

Given the fact of a group visit, it could be possible to arrange some very interesting presentations during the day and in the evenings, from both state organisations, as well as FHSs and the like, but considerable advance planning would be required.

Food for thought :!: :!:

Well,

I'm up for a trip to Belfast - and I can thoroughly recommend a B&B in Malone Road called The Old Rectory - and from memory I think it's within reasonable walking distance of PRONI ... My friends had to haud me back the last time I visited because we were there for another purpose!!

I enjoyed Saturday a great deal and look forward to the next meeting! Thanks to all who contributed and to Liz for organising.

p.s. Liz, can you please email me the book list?

Thanks,
Helen

The Rectory sounds good. A 5 min walk from PRONI, maybe a 15 min drive to GRONI and the city centre.

They can accommodate 11, but only on the basis of 8 people sharing twin bedrooms, i.e. they have only 3 singles.

And the prices are within the "budget" of £40, and include breakfast (an Ulster fry)!

Anyone know of an equivalent place in Dublin?

Hi all,
If i could add another name - the young lass at the left hand side of the back row.
This is Helen from Greenock.
We'd a very pleasant wee blether at the end of a most enjoyable day.
Bibby, trust you are now much better - what a pity you couldn't make it.
