For those of us whose memories are based on the pre-Clockwork Orange era, the name changes were...

Partick Cross - renamed Kelvinhall.
Merkland St - renamed Partick.
Govan Cross - renamed Govan.
Copland Rd - renamed Ibrox.

1..2..3... after me ..................... (with thanks to Cliff Hanley and Ian Gourley)

I know a lot of folk go fancy places at the Fair
They like to sail in steamers or to hurtle thro' the air
But I've a fav'rit route that goes to many ports of call
Although unless you look'd you'd never notice it at all

Chorus

There's Partick Cross and Cessnock, Hillhead and Merkland St
George's Cross and Govan Cross where all the people meet
West St, Shields Rd, the trains go round and round
You've never lived unless you've been on the Glasgow Underground'

They tell me that Majorca is a dandy place to be
Or Switzerland or Italy or even Gay Paree,
There’s many lovely beauty spots upon the Clyde of Firth
But I would rather always travel doon below the earth.

Chorus:

There’s names that ring like magic that can thrill you through and through
They seem to call you back wi’ an enchantment never knew
There’s places far away are like a song that’s sweetly sung
You’ll roll them round your mooth and feel them slidin’ aff yer tongue.

Chorus:

I never liked the stourie winds, the showers or the snaw,
The sun can get too burny and the sleet’s no nice at a’
But I don’t mind the climate now as on my way I go
The dolce vita’s waiting there a hundred feet below.

Chorus:

For the princely sum of 79p you can download it from http://www.tradtunes.com/album_details. ... um_id=2424

Anyone planning to take the train through from Edinburgh for this event?

Anne
Yes, so I had better apply for a place at the event.

Liz (or others who know the area) - Is there a station nearby that I can travel to by transferring at Queen Street Station? That way I should be able to get a through ticket from Edinburgh Waverley Station. In the finest Scots fashion (by reputation only) - a cheap day return. :D

I take it the building is the one marked E14 (across the River Kelvin from most of the Universtity buildings) on the map on the following webpage.

See this web address - the easiest way to get there is train to Queen Street, underground from Buchanan St to Kelvinbridge and we're about 400 yards from there.

If the meeting is being held in the St. Andrew's Building in Eldon St.,
then it might be easier to get off the subway at Kelvinbridge (top of map),
and walk down South Woodside Rd, then Park Rd. to Eldon St.
O my g.. I've just looked at the map that's the old "dough school" building where I went to college :!: :!: I didn't know it had been taken over by Glasgow uni.

I'm going to spend as much time reminiscing (sp?) as learning about Irish research.

I have looked at the map and the aerial photograph available on-line. Am I right in saying there is parking nearby as I want to drive rather that the train route.

Hi Liz

What's parking going to be like on a Saturday around the time I'll be getting there?

I see the Dough School had some courses of its time...

"... the place of women in the home and the details of The Bride’s Course - a three month course in housewifery aimed at engaged ladies, which always makes the modern women smile, if not chuckle out loud."

All the best,
