Royal Irish Constabulary

Hi all,

Long time no speak, once again i require your help. I'm researching my Irish side of the family these are my grandmothers (Mary Callaghan) grandparents and g.grandparents. The Summers family, this has also been spelt as Somers, Sommers and Sammers. Probably due to there broad Irish accents registrars have misinterpreted the name. Anyway, I've been tracing John Somers who married Mary Sullivan. These are the parents names on Patrick's marriage and death certs that i found on Scotlands People, but a distant relative of mine has contacted me asking if it's possible the name Sullivan was possibly wrong as he's found info on John Somers and Mary Gallivan? Possibly with there accents the registrar mis-heard the name Gallivan and put down Sullivan??

Also, I found a John Somer on Ancestry who was in the RIC aged 21. John was born around 1800-1801 as far as i can figure out. How do i go about finding more info on the RIC records as it states that it has info on where John came from, next of kin, children etc...

Thanking you in advance
Katie

Katie,

Jim Herlihy's The Royal Irish Constabulary: A Complete Alphabetical List of Officers and Men, 1816-1922 (Dublin 1999) gives a complete listing of members of the Force, with their service numbers.
It simplifies access to the records.

You can request a copy of the book from your local library and this will give you his service number.

Microfilm copies of the General Register are available in:

The National Archives of Ireland
The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland
Through the Family History Centers of the LDS Church

I was able then to get a copy of my relations records from the National archives in Dublin when I was over there.

You could get a researcher over there or Belfast to get it for you at a price, the same applies for Kew.

The records give his date of appointment, age on joining, his religion, native county, marriage date(if married) and wife's native county.
It also give his trade or calling and allocations to which counties during his service.
Other informations like rewards, punishment and date of discharge are less helpful but interesting.

It does not give his parents or children information.

Certainly if married this gives you enough information to allow you to possibly get a copy of his marriage information and from that both his and wife's parents names.

But you need to weigh up the cost against the information gained.

Certainly If you need to go to Dublin or Belfast to get other information then it's worthwhile going to the archives to get a copy.

hope this helps

Katie

The registers and a number of other records of the RIC are in The National Archives at Kew, and there is a Research Guide on the website that you might find helpful.

Good luck with your research
