Post by PaulB28 » Sat Feb 23, 2008 10:02 pm

I am looking for information John Garvey who married Bridget Mackin on the 27th of October 1858 at Lower Creggan Roman Catholic Church they had six children, Catherine, Hugh, Patrick, Ellen and John. Also looking for information on John's sisters Mary Garvey who married Patrick Byrnes and his two brothers Patrick J Garvey and Hugh Garvey who both became priests and went to Philadelphia.

Hi Paul
Do you know if either of these families came to Scotland at some point?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello,
What sort of information are you looking for concerning the two priests? I see Hugh in Philadelphia in 1870, but none of the Patricks I can find are priests. Do you have them in other censuses?

All the best,
Sarah

The Garvey's

Hi Lesley and Sarah

Thanks for replying to my post.

I don't think any of the Garvey's ended up in Scotland, but Mary Garvey's Son John Byrnes and his family ended up in Scotland but as far as I know his parents Patrick Byrnes and Mary Garvey stayed in Ireland.

With regard to two priest's I have found Patrick on the following census.

1860 Philadelphia Ward 10 Philadelphia Pennsylvania United States
1880 Reading Berks Pennsylvania United States

both census record he is down as P Garvey. I found a bit about Patrick on the internet, Patrick became the rector of St Charles Serminery in Philadelphia.

I found Hugh on two census

1870 Philadelphia Ward 16 District 49 Philadelphia Pennylvania United States
1900 Bristol Bucks Pennsylvania United States

I am trying to find out what happend to both of them, Patrick is mentioned in the book The Revenge of Thomas Eakins as Thomas Eakins painted his portrait when he was rector of the St Charles Seminary and it mentions that he died about 1908.

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Paul
