Location of Street and Town **Birthday bumped**

Post by CalumD » Sat Feb 06, 2010 1:33 am

I am looking for the name and location of a street which may be in Cushendall, Cushendun or maybe Ballycastle.

The photo which can be accessed through the link below was taken c1952.

There are some features in the background which may help with identification.

I do hope that some of the members can help.

Hi Calum
The hill in the distance is very distinctive - I know there is one which is a similar shape to that in Sligo- see
http://www.nicko500.co.uk/Ben%20Bulben% ... 201000.htm

But that is a long way from Antrim and the places you metioned. Could the photo possibly be in Sligo, or is there a similar shaped hill elsewhere?

Or do you think the shape in the photo is a cliff face on the coast?

Best wishes
Lesley

A google on images produces:
Cushendall, Co Antrim coast road
Lurigethan Mountain
http://ni_towns.tripod.com/cushendall/lurigethan_mountain.html

And a similar coastal shape at Ballycastle
http://markgordononline.com/Ballycastle.html

- so maybe forget Sligo.... :?
I reckon Ballycastle is a very strong contender.... :D and a look on Google maps seems to confirm that if you were in Ballycastle, looking eastwards torwards the sea, the outcrop would be in your picture frame. Now to find the street...!

OK, guessing time- could the wee girl possibly be in Carnduff (to the north west of Ballycastle) in White Park Road (on the section running from southwest to north east) with houses on the left, and open land to the right between her and the outcrop?

Not seeing an obvious road in Ballycastle, but then in the 1950s the amount of housing may have been very different from what we are seeing in the satellite view on Google, and where there was open countryside may now be houses.

Looking again at the photo, I think she may be in an area of Ballycastle which is now more built up
- I'm seeing a church spire behind her right shoulder and what looks to be more buildings behind her further down a slope, so that kind of rules out Carnduff.

Many church spires look very similar,so not great for drawing conclusions, but it looks like this church spire could well be the one in your photo

So...Leyland Road?? Houses on left of her, open land to the right.... houses not quite in the correct formation though.

You really need a "local" who knows the place on the ground - it is difficult to tell from the satellite view as you cannot see the undulations of the land.

Hi Calum

I see Lesley is going well with links to pictures and other areas for you. My interest in your post is in the possiblity it might turn out to be Ballycastle ...

I have never been there but my dad's family came from round that part of northern Ireland. Are you searching for ancestors in that area yourself?

Hi Liz
I'm busy convincing myself that is is Ballycastle - I think that is Scotland we can see in the distance in the 1952 photo

Best wishes

Hello Lesley

Many thanks for your interest.

I was amazed that you spotted a church spire in the background.

I found another old photo taken from the same place but with much more background detail:

I'm sure that the church in your link is the same.

There is a chap from the Antrim Historical Society who has local knowledge and is trying to identify the street.

I will let you know the outcome

Hi Calum
I'm sure that the church in your link is the same.
Now that we can see bit more of the church tower in the second photo, it does look to be very similar. Seems to be called Holy Trinity.

Hope your man in Antrim can pinpoint the street for you - do let us know how you get on.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Liz,

Yes, I am researchimg my paternal grandmother's family who came from Co Antrim.

She was born Ann McAuley in 1877 in Cushendall. Her father was Charles Mcauley (a blacksmith) married to Ann McElheron.
My sister and I vaguely remember visiting her family in Ireland in the 1950s when we were very young. We only have photos to help us in our search.
We have some info from the 1911 Census but will have to wait for the 1901 Census for confirmation.

Regards,

Calum D
