I have two sets of great great grandparents who were originally from Ireland but went to Scotland before 1840 to find work.
The surnames are MEEHAN/MEIGHAN, GALLACHER/GALLAGHER, TULLY, BRENNAN.
Peter Meighan marreid Mary Tully, their son, my great grandfather PATRICK MEEHAN/MEIGHAN was born in May 1840 in Scotland, probably the Glasgow area.
My great grandmother, MARGARET GALLACHER/GALLAGHER was the daughter of CORNELIUS GALLACHER/GALLAGHER, a farmer, and his wife MARY BRENNAN.
Margaret married Patrick in St. Mary's Chapel, District of Bridgeton, Burgh of Glasgow 11 July 1864. They lived at 29 Coalhill St.
They had at least five children before immigrating to the Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania area in the United States ca 1880 to 1881
Both the elder Meighans and Gallachers are estimated to have been born in Irl. about 1820. They are not believed to have immigrated.
Patrick had a brother Edward, born in Scotland in 1851. There may also have been a sister, Margaret Meehan. Edward married Mary Reilly in Scotland an a son, Patrick Aloysius was born there before they immigrated in 1880 or 1881.
I have documentation of the above information and would be glad to send it to anyone who has a link to this family. Thank You Mary P

Hi, you may want to check out the 1855 birth cert of Ellen Meechan who was born in Ayrshire to Peter and Mary Tullay.
Remember that Peter and Patrick are interchangeable. As an extra wee hint have a look for the death of a Mary Tully in Lanark around 1876. Cross reference to Mary Meechan.
In 1881 there is a Peter Meechan of exactly the right age staying in the Little Sisters of the Poor (St. Joseph's House) in Glasgow.
You'll have to do a wee bit more groundwork before adopting them as yours but it looks good so far.

Haven't been able to find a likely death of a Peter or Patrick Me*H*n but Ellen got married in Ayrshire in 1875 to John Callaghan. I had a real problem finding them all on the census for 1881, but did:

Hello Andy. You may remember my Queates from SP.billyf brought them to your attention and you solved the riddle and took them back to Ireland. You said at the time to let you know when I was ready to work on them.Well ,where do I start.I have joined an Irish forum but they are not very helpful.Does Ireland have a site like SP where I can search from here(In good ol' Nova Stotia)I have learned of the problems with the records ,with many missing for 1 reason or another and I understand I might not have any success.I have found a number of other Irish connections so maybe I can find 1 or some of them even if I can't find my Queates. Not to mention my husband'sside of the family.Depending on when they went to Nfld.will tell me whether or not I will find a record for them.I'm way passed that .I'll have to play devils advocate and see if I can find them disappearing from the other side.I can't wait.(she said, rubbing her hands with glee.)

Thanks Andy,I know Andrew Queate married Janet R.Young 23 July 1868.
I know all about their lives and their 5 children right up to present thanks to you and billyf.Once you both got me started away I went.Problem being Andrew's parents.
From this 1868 marriage cert.they are James Queate farmer (Deceased)and Jane Ferguson. On a 1881 census Andrew is listed as being born in Ireland and the IGI for James and Jane state they were married 1833 Skerry and Racavan County Antrim,Ireland.
Jane born abt.1809 Ireland,James born abt.1805 Ireland.
There is also a listing for Andrew and a brother James.
James Queate 15 Dec. 1833 Skerry and Racavan,County Antrim,Ireland
Andrew Queate 20 June 1837 Racavan,Antrim,Ireland
I've been booting around Ireland looking for James and Jane's families, marriage or even deaths but no luck. Thanks to Scotsmum I did find some great reading and a bunch of Queates with various spellings who signed the Ulster Covenant.
Where can I go from here?I know the records are not the best for many reasons.Do you know of a place where I can have a go at finding something on them?
Thanks bunches
Heather

Griffith's has a Taylor Quait in Skerry
and
Anne Quaite Main Street,Broughshane (Racavan)
Robert Quait Kilbegs (Antrim)
Jane Quete Wellington Street, Ballymena (Looks good) her death will probably be available (Irish death certs are pretty useless but a relation may have reported the death)
Your next best source would be the Tithe Applotment books that were taken from 1823-1838. I think that the Racavan date was 1831 so although you may just miss James perhaps a father or widowed mother will be listed. Queate is a very uncommon name so you may get lucky.
When searching the Tithes (not available online) keep a VERY open mind on the spelling. I would not be surprised to see McWatt, Twohig, Twigg becoming Queate.

Hello Andy and Ian,Due to some Newfoundland cod and a wee bit of moose I have found a possible help for my Queate,Quade etc. search right here at the base.Seems my hubbies got a co worker named Quade who has done quite a bit of research on his Irish roots and would love to give me pointers and even share info. if we find a link. Thanks to both of you I'll actually know what he is talking about when he tells me of all the differences between Irish and Scottish research.
